    Natural Balance Duck and Potato

I've been looking into a good dry food to add variety to my dog's diets and for travel, etc.  I was considering trying Natural Balance Duck and Potato until I read the ingredients and saw that ;Potatoes are the FIRST ingredient.  Shouldn't Duck be the first ingredient?

I use this food and think the quality is good, but based on other's comments about the protein always being listed first, I've wondered the same thing.

I may just throw it in every now and then for variety.

I usually vary between NB Duck and Potato and the Venison and Brown Rice. My guys do great on it. Our lab used to have itchy skin and ear infections on a regular basis. Since I switched, she has been great. [:D]

Not sure about the potato being listed first.

It is the percentage of protein vs the order of the list of ingredients which is important. The food you are mentioning has a min 21% protein which is probably what most of the premium kibble dog foods have.   I feed my dog the Natural Balance Venison and Brown Rice Dry and it is 22% Protein.

My dogs have done well with it, when I've fed it. Of course, my pair are a dog with liver issues, and a senior, so they may have lower protein requirements.

Kelly, that's an adorable little Shih Tzu you have!! [:)

As far as the first ingredient being potato, I wasn't crazy about that when I looked at the ingredient list either, but after the first ingredient of duck, the next 2 are duck and duck meal. I think after the water weight of the potatoes are removed, duck might actually be the first ingredient.

Yep, according to [linkhttp://www.nutritiondata.com/facts-B00001-01c20fB.html]this[/link] 38g of potato contains 31.7g of water.

My 1 year old German Shepard has been doing well on Pinnacle Duck and Potato.

It has 23% protein & 13% fat (minimum).  They have a 1.5 pound size you can start with to see if it works for your pooch.

I also feed her their Trout & Sweet Potato sometimes but wish it had more protein.  I've only had her 5 weeks but she looks completely different from the puny dog I picked up who had been fed Science Diet.

Thank you.  That's Charlie.  Your Gingerbread is a cutie too!  Don't you just love 'em?!

I fed NB Duck and Potato for the past few months, but I bought NB Venison and Brown Rice because the store was out of Duck and Potato. So we'll see how that goes.

You will see the carb listed forst on many "allergy formulas". I have fed NB D&;P to my dogs on occasion in rotation and they love it. They seem to like anything with duck though.

Thanks! The orange and white one (Riley) is a hyper, nosey little booger. Trimming his nails is a pain because he's such a wiggle worm. It's much easier to do on the others because two are flabby and lazy  (Pogo and Temporary) and the other is blind and just really laid back (Permanent).

With a lot of the allergy foods, the non meat protein source is listed as the first ingredient.  With Wellness Simple Food Solutions, it is the same way.  The duck and venison formulas have brown rice as the first ingredient.

The Wellness Simple Solutions is the worst smelling dog food to me! I broke a bag once at work so brought it home for my dogs..they all sniffed at it, looked at me, and walked away. I've had customers tell me their dogs won't eat it as well. I'm not sure why..but it's smell is very unappetizing!
