Well, I'm just doing it, because he is FINALLY eating

I have a 18 week old Lab/Coon who is a very picky eater and it is probably my fault.  we started him on science diet, then switched to Natural Balance and then Bil-Jac.  Well, he started well on all of them, but there were points where he wasn't eating for days.  I was freaking out.  So I figured out a good combo for him that most of will probably roast me for.

We bought a bunch of those Nutro Puppy Wet food packets and mix 1/3 packet with each serving of Bil-Jac, 3 times daily.  I then add a dash of warm water, mix it together and he licks the bowl clean everytime, and goes crazy while I prepare it.  This has gone on for about two and a half weeks now, longer than any of the other food trials.  So I'm sticking with it unlesss any of you see a severe problem with this.  I'm just so happy he is eating!

I'd say stay with it if that's what he's eating and he's doing fine on it.  The food isn't going to do him any good just sitting in his bowl anyway, right??

    I'm with Lori on this.
I HATE HATE HATE tough love. OH GOSH I HATE IT. It breaks my heart. So, if your dog is eating the puppy food, feed it to him. And congratulations, he's eating! I'd celebrate because I know how that feels.

Same with my pup.  Only I am using 1 Tablsespoon canned Canidae and 1 cup Puppy Innova which I know is very good food.  She won't eat dry food.

Be careful with Nutro, dry Nutro has BHT, a bad substance.

sigh. would you feed your kid on hotdogs and twinkies if that was the only thing he'd eat? of  course not.

That said, I personally never feed just dry kibble-- how can that be appetizing or healthy? I picked the best kibble I could find (TO wild n natural), and mix it with either canned, home-cooked, or raw. Dogs gobble it up. Actually, they'll eat this particular kibble dry, but I don't want them to. Can't be healthy.

Bil-jac and Nutro aren't BAD foods. I personally don't like Nutro because it's so expensive. You'd think it was a super-premium food by its price.

No, I wouldn't feed my kids hotdogs FOREVER just because it's the only thing he'd eat.
I understand that as much as I HATE tough love, it's sometimes needed. But this person has been STRUGGLING to get their pup to eat. They've tried several things.

They're not feeding hotdogs or twinkies. Just an over-priced food that is working for now.

I have to jump in here and say that A LOT of people DO feed their kids absolute JUNK, hence the sickening child obesity (and countless other diet-related health problems) rates.

Gosh I agree! I hate to say this...but my friend came to the U.S. from France...and the first thing he said when he got off the plane was "Gosh, everyone is so fat!" It's horrible but its true....let's just blame it on McDonald's and sue them for the SuperSize! Ha ha...it's called self control! [8|]

And all-you-can-eat buffets. It is so easy to overindulge because everything looks so good. In my younger days, I could make buffet managers quake in their shoes.

Just in case I wasn't clear what I feed him:
1 cup of Bil-Jac dry and 1/3 of a wet food puppy packet of food each time, 3 times daily.

This was after over 5 weeks of picky almost no eating and food always left in the bowl.

Persoanlly, I think there are worse things I can be feeding him.

I'm not trying to make him a show dog or a field dog, just my "best friend", so I want him to be happy, even if it means Bil-Jac and Nutro.

I figure the $.70/day I spend on the Nutro wet food packet and whatever I spend on the 3 cups of Bil-Jac/day is well worth seeing my little man clean his bowl everytime and be much more happy and much more energy.

Yes there are far worse things you could be feeding! Thank god it's not beneful or something equally grose that he would only eat!

If he likes stuff mixed in with his kibble(what dog doesnt),why not replace the nutro with fresh meats and stuff whenever you can.

Yes, thats a great idea...and I think I will do that.  I'll pre mix a bunch each week, store it on the fridge, and mix it in...gotta find out what Nutro uses to make it so damn appetizing!!!

Edie-You know what, not everyone wants every meat known to man in one kibble.  I pass on foods like that.  It gets to a point where it's ridiculous and they've got everything but the kitchen sink in the bag.
