    food food food

I picked up a bag of canidae - 20 lb and some EVO 95 percent poultry canned. Well, I was hoping that they would dig right in to that kibble. not so. haven't found one yet that they will eat right off the bat without canned food mixed in. however, with the evo (and some left over solid gold canned) mixed onto the kibble...it was "clean plate club" time. I like Canidae because I have a 16 month, a 7.5 year, and a 14 year old and they can all eat it. And from what I have read it is pretty good for the price. Darn, I wish they would eat the kibble! Guess they will if they have to, right? javascript:void(AddText('[;)]';))
And now I am reading that the ash in the EVO poultry might not be good!!! Do I need to take the other cans back and get something else?????

Hmmm.  Well, unless any of your dogs have had Struvite crystals or Kidney problems, I wouldn't worry about it.

However, when I used to work for a pet supplies store, I was always very precausious about recommending a diet change with an older dog.  But only you know how old or healthy your dog is or acts.

      Where did you read that? The ash content for the EVO canned poultry( chicken and turkey) is 2.87%; [linkxsl=//product%5B@id='1387'%5D]http://www.naturapet.com/display.php?d=nutrition-facts&;pxsl=//product%5B@id='1387'%5D[/link];>http://www.naturapet.com/display.php?d=nutrition-facts&;pxsl=//product%5B@id='1387'%5D]http://www.naturapet.com/display.php?d=nutrition-facts&;pxsl=//product%5B@id='1387'%5D[/link];

It's the dry that has a high ash content of 12.39%.

Alot of dogs dont seem to find canidae kibble very palatable. Have you tried the red meat evo? My dogs go crazy for it,as well as all the 95% canned versions.
No, you dont need to take the cans back [:)] Maybe continue mixing in the canned with the canidae and try something different once you've finished it.

I just can't for the life of me understand why people (in general) want their dog to eat just kibble.  The canned is much better for them and if they like it too, why not give it to them.

I would probably feed pure canned but it's like twice as much money as feeding kibble.

    It's usually about convenience, sadly.

that's wet. If you convert it to dry weight, the ash in the canned EVO is 13% too.

Me too. I never feed dry kibble by itself. Always mix it with something wet.

Thanks Mudpuppy; hadn't thought about converting it to dry weight. I always moisten Jessie's kibble and also add canned meat or fresh meat to it. She also gets some meals of canned food only. I wouldn't feed her canned for every meal because it is high in fat on a dry matter basis and it's easier to maintain her weight if I stay below 14% fat with dog food.

I agree. I think dogs that only get dry food for their whole lives are really missing out.

I agree with Canidae being bland...but then again my boy doesn't like any kibble by itself (unless is like Beneful, or some poop food), and I sure as heck don't blame him. BORING! But Canidae is an EXCELLENT kibble for a great price...beside he would not touch Innova...and I can't feed him the grainless ones yet cuz he is only 10 months. But now I am not sure if I even will...and Canidae only has white and brown rice. [;)

I am not concerned about the Ash level, is it that bad in the EVO canned? So many other canned foods have had Quality Control issues (Merrick...and now my friend said she found a rubber band in her Evanger's canned beef!!!! [:o]) I think Innova and Canidae have been VERY CLEAN with their foods, so I trust them the most....so far...

I like the added fat from the canned foods too. I think its good to have, especially in winter. My boy has 14 acres to run around on constantly...I can't keep fat on him if I try! [:)]

Sammy Sam loves canned food.  I had to cut back to once a day mixing to see if
it helps his stools get firmer.   We just switched to Chicken Soup kibble so maybe
that will agree with him tummy, this way he can have more of the canned.
So far, I like the Merrick canned as does he, but what a price tag.

One reason I don't feed canned food is because it's icky (for me, not the dog, I'm sure he'd love it).  The meaty smell of canned food creeps me out (I'm not a big meat eater and I don't like processed foods either).  I don't want open cans of that in my fridge, I don't want my milk to smell like dog food.  I love my dog, but it's my house too!

Also, kibble is much more convenient for camping, travelling, and for if he's kennelled or someone else is watching him.  It's easy to store and feed.  He gets at least one plain kibble meal a day (supplements and extras at dinner), and that keeps him from being a picky eater who needs special mixtures to coax him to eat.

Plus canned food is just not necessary for us.  The dog is doing *great* on a high-quality kibble (eagle pack holistic chicken) supplemented with fish oil, yogurt, fruits, veggies, and sometimes fresh meat as well.  He is healthy and happy and he enjoys his meals.  I have put a lot of thought into his diet, and I don't appreciate being told I'm not taking good care of him just because kibble fits our lifestyle better than canned.

I know you don't feel *safe* with Timberwolf, but I urge you to try their canned foods when they start selling them.
I *think* they'll be safe enough to feed your pup. But I'm not sure.
