I would do a gradual switch too. I would also do what Kennel Keeper said and add a little yogurt.

I have yet to do a gradual switch myself, but I would recommend it to everyone else.

I show my Pugs, and have had several litters. Not much breeding experience, but a little. It is really common for puppies to have lose stools when going to a new home, the stress of not being with littermates and new environment can really play a part. I would not worry about switching over to a new food within a week, even over a few days should not be any problem for a puppy. I have had people buy puppies form me, it usually my show puppies the new owners put on their own food right away. None of these puppies have had any problems with a fast switch. I think as long as the protien source is the same, it is fine.

I know many excellent show breeders who feed foods like Eukanuba and Purina. Many of these foods are very common among show breeders, their foods are pushed enough at the dogs shows too. I would not say someone is a bad breeder because they feed Purina. Not a food of my choice, but at least it was not old Roy or some really awful food.

I would switch over slowly.  That having been said, we have switched Sally over cold turkey a few times and she's had no issue--but if it were my pup I'd do it slow.

We tried to do the gradual switch from one food to another with our dachshund puppies.  That didn't work at all.  We started feeding them the Innova puppy and EVO RM formula mixed in with what the breeder was feeding them.  They would pick out the Innova pieces and would leave the original breeder food in the bowl.  We then noticed that the combo of the Innova puppy and the EVO RM was a little much for them and we started on the Canidae and Innova puppy mix.  Still they picked out the Canidae and Innova.  We continued to give them some of the EVO RM on occassion as we worried that it might be too much for their digestive systems in larger amounts.  Then they wouldn't eat the Innova anymore.  We then mixed the Canidae and the EVO RM and they have been eating that ever since.  Since we switched them to a higher quality of food, they won't even consider what the breeder was feeding them.   We also give them plain whole yougurt with cream for their digestion (also because one of them got a yeast infection in his ears) and salmon oil for their skin.  Their coats are much shinier and softer now thanks to the salmon oil.  We did have some troubles with constant scratching but that has gone away with the better diet and salmon oil.  Hope all this info helps. I would add a little yogurt in with the food "blend" while switching him over. That should help somewhat in the transition.
What are you switching him too?

Sorry- I'm so darn sleep deprived that I missed your question the first time! I'm switching him to Healthwise chicken & oatmeal puppy food. I chose it because it's a really simple formula and hopefully easy on his little system.

Whenever I bring home a new dog, regardless of age, I don't transition. I figure they're going through stress, and NEED good nutrition. I have no idea what either of my dogs was fed before I got them. One of my fosters ate store brand Kibbles N Bits. She switched easily. There's always pumpkin, yogurt, and chamomile tea.

That looks like a great food to feed a puppy. Simple, yet healthy. Good luck with Cinnabun[;)]
