Is Chicken Soup that bad?

    Is Chicken Soup that bad?

I've been looking for a new food for my pup.  He is on Solid Gold Wolf  Cub but still has soft stool for a month now.  I've received samples of Innova, Chicken Soup, Muenster, Wellness and Nutro.
I gave him taste tests, he seems to like them all.  The Muenster has too much corn/grain for my liking.  Innova was prob his favorite but way to hard to find and rather expensive.  Seems like Chicken Soup is about as good as Innova but less expensive.  Am I missing something here?  Im not too familiar with label reading but the first five ingredients look great.  It's also easy to find around here. What do you all think.....you all have way more exp than i do, he is my first dog.  Thanks

we had our cats on it for a while, and will probably put them back on it once the food they are eating now is gone. i thought it looked good too. i think the biggest problem many people have with it, is the fact that it is made by diamond. diamond had some quality control issues a while back and some dogs died as the result. i dont think the chicken soup line of food was involved though.

My "doggie bible" is GREAT DANE LADY,,,I look for her website all the time...its not just for Danes,,,she is a nurtritional consultant.  She STUDIES dog food, and believes in natural food, natural healing along with conventional.  She has a list of suggested kibble, here is the website:
[linkhttp://www.greatdanelady.com/articles/criteria_list_of_better_foods.htm]http://www.greatdanelady.com/articles/criteria_list_of_better_foods.htm[/link].   Chicken Soup IS on that list. She made up this list with this criteria:
    • Feed trial results
    • Laboratory tests on guaranteed anaylsis
    • Philosophy of the company
    • Ethics of the company
    • Truth in advertising and marketing

Chicken Soup is a good food, don't let the low price fool you. I think they have changed up their formula slightly a couple of times, but the most recent ingredient list looks good - they added fish meal near the top and it looks like some probiotics too.

Chicken Soup is a really good food! I personally think overall it's THE best food in the price range. [:)]

I had been feeding it to Roxie, but she began refusing it out of the blue.  Its ingredients are great for the price, compared to competitors ... namely, Nutro.

I'd recommend it if your dog likes it.

Chicken Soup is a great food!  It is one of the lowest priced holistic foods, if not the lowest priced.  If your dog likes it, I say go with it.

I really think it's a great food! I am feeding it to my 2 jack russells while waiting for my order of Timberwolf Organics.

Looking at the bag here, I see that the first 4 ingredients are all meat-related: chicken, turkey, chicken meal, turkey meal.

It has flaxseed, which is good for skin/coat (my horse gets 1 cup of it each day and it has done wonders for his coat!) and it also has fruits/veggies.

The only thing that may be problematic is if your guy is allergic to chicken, otherwise, I think it's definitely a superior food.

Here is a thread I started a little while back on Chicken Soup:

    [linkhttp://forum.dog.com/asp/tm.asp?m=116706&mpage=1&key]http://forum.dog.com/asp/tm.asp?m=116706&mpage=1&key[/link]=

They recently changed their formula and then changed it AGAIN in a matter of weeks. They NO longer use Turkey Meal, it is replaced with Ocean Fish Meal. There was also a controversy with them over Ethoxyquin. The were buying their fish from a supplier that preserved it with Ethoxyquin (cancer causing agent), but now after so many negative responses, they have gotten rid of that. Good thing! [:)]

The labels on the bag of Chicken Soup can have 3 different ingredient lists! I have included this response from the company which tells you which batches DO NOT contain Ethoxyquin and which ones are the NEWEST/ACCURATE batches of Chicken Soup. It looks to still be a decent quality food. My advice would be to wait until all these changes are finalized and the newest bags are on the shelf, with the correct newest ingredients before purchasing...because you never know...[8|]

"The formula will not be changed any time in the near future. We have secured this naturally preserved ocean fish meal so we do not anticipate removing it, as we believe strongly in the value of omega-3 fatty acids that are being contributed to the diet. The presevative is a blend of vitamin E and Rosemary.
Products with the best before date of January 2007 through March 15, 2007 could contain very low residual levels of ethoxyquin from the ocean fish meal. This food is safe to be fed to your pets. Best before dates prior to January 2007 or after March 15, 2007 will either not contain ocean fish meal or will contain naturally preserved ocean fish meal, respectively."

    Sincerely,
    Dr. Melissa Brookshire.

HA! I guess a cancer causing agent is a good thing! I do not like this statement from them might I add...[:@]

Thank you all so much for the great information.  We will give chicken soup a try.  I just may need to rotate foods, ill see how it goes.  He really liked the Solid Gold at first but now pretty much
turns his nose up at it unless mixed with canned.
I thought he may have had a chicken alergy but I dont think so now as i didnt omit the chicken totally from his diet.  His scratching
has calmed down a great deal.  Only notice him scratching first thing in the morning.  I will go pick up some Chicken Soup and mix that in with the remainder of his Solid Gold.  Thanks again for all the info.
