    fish food and fish oil???

OK - dumb question.  For those of you that feed a fish based food (I'm looking at the EP anchovy, sardine etc formula for one of my dogs) do you also supplement with fish oil??  If you do, do you also make any adjustments?

    That's not a dumb question! [:)]

I do not feed a fish based food...my pup doesn't like them for some reason unkown to me?! Anyway, what I can tell you from my experience is that when I fed him Nutro Natural Choice Large Breed Puppy (has Sunflower Oil) his coat was OK, when he was on CA Natural (Sunflower Oil again) his coat was improved over Nutro but not as good as I thought it could be. Then I switched him to Natural Balance Duck/Potato, not fish based I know, but it had Salmon Oil (it did have Canola Oil too)...his coat was MAGNIFICENT! Absolutely gorgeous, silky, shiny...people would ask me how I got his coat so soft and shiny. I just told them I feed him a good quality food. I have never added any supplements or oils. So, I would think that a food that had fish or fish oils would definitely help the skin and coat, moreso than Sunflower Oil I say.

I feed a fish based food and don't supplement, but have been thinking about doing so.  I hadn't got as far as trying to find out if I would need to adjust the amount of fish oil, so I'll be interested in the answers you get.

I do love Ben's coat since I have had him on fish formulas, though.  :)

I WISH Ella would eat fish formula foods. She did ok at first on the Ocean Blue but then she decided that she didn't want to eat it anymore. The only fish type thing I can get her to eat is the Zuke's Salmon treats that her trainer gave her. She LOVES them.

That is definitely not a dumb question. I wonder a bit about it when I switch over to a fish based food (like now!). My compromise is, instead of supplementing with a concentrated oil, I add whole fish (canned or fresh) every few days. You know how obsessive I am about the Border collies and their fish, however.

I'm going back to the Mmillenia when the weather cools down a bit and then I'm looking at the EP Anchovy, etc for their cold weather feed. Holistique was wonderful but I had to use a lot of red meat in the RMBs to keep condition up.

Minnie gets EP fish and 3V caps and a tiny bit of sardine also in there with her veggies.  So, I do supplement her with it although its much less than I give Bailey (or Lucy when shes here) whos on the Innova.

Gizmo gets fresh salmon about two or three times a week to get get fish oil. I've been thinking about swiching to fish based food but would probly also still give her fresh salmon along with that.

*nods* I am beginning to suspect June's gastro issues may be chicken related. I've had her on duck & oatmeal (w/chicken fat), and the last two times I've tossed her (even in small amounts) cooked or raw chicken she's wound up with explosive diarrhea. So, once this bout is over we're going to try the Eagle Pack Anchovy for a while. Mmillenia is also on my list to try.

Forgot to add that Ben DOES get fish (mackeral, salmon etc) on top of his fishy kibble a couple of times a week.  I do that more because he loves it than for any other reason.

Huh. That would be kind of inconvenient, but it would explain a lot!

It's a little scary how many dogs I'm hearing of with chicken problems.

I've always alternated oils, but haven't found any food with enough oils for my dogs' needs. They get something every day, regardless of what their meat is.

No doubt!  She's been doing well on the Duck & Oatmeal, except when (duh) I gave her some extra chicken.  Anyway, once things are back to normal I'm going to try the EP fish.  This also explains why boiled chicken and rice not only DIDN'T help her runs, but made them worse.  [;)]

What I'm thinking is maybe supplementing with Salmon oil in about a half dose, and/or some other fish as we go??

I know this tread is a little old.  But, since this is on the same topic. . .

Does anyone know if fish oil can cause diarrhea or soft stools?  I had started a new bottle of fish body oil and around that same time we ended up with soft poop.  And, nothing else had changed.  Thanks.

It can! Particularly if you don't slowly work your way up to your optimal dose. Speaking from experience. [:D] Was it a different brand, or a new addition to her diet?

I don't think any processed dry food has enough omega 3's even the fish based formulas, so yeah, I would definitely add fish oil with any food.
