    Greenie horror story!

This is so sad. I was talking with my friend on the phone and she told me that she heard that someones' Golden Retriever died because it choked on a greenie, poor guy! I have heard this once or twice before, anyone else? I'm definally never going to buy one of those again!

I have heard that before, but it could happen with ANY chew thing.  Rawhide, raw bones, squeeky toys.  I even know a dog that choked on kibble(unlikely, but possible).  I think the biggest problem is people buying the wrong size.  As with any chew, you should watch your dog and when it gets small, take it away.  I just gave Rose a Greenie about 30 minutes ago.  I let her chew it until its about halfway gone, then I hold the end until it is small enough she could choke and then I throw that peice away.

My inlaws told me to never get Greenies. I hadn't planned on it anyway.

That post is about Dentabones(made by Pedigree), not Greenies.

    Colleen,
I know the difference but the results are the same and that is why I posted it. My Sweet Penny faced a terrible end due to these things and the reason why I posted her story is that I would like people to read it and not have to go through the same heartbreak as I did.
They both are nasty products and cause either choking or blockages and alot of times the end result is the same, death.
For your comment that choking could happen with any treat, well yes that is possible but if it does occur atleast we can do something about it. With the 2 crap products I am speaking about, it is not always choking that occurs. Alot of times these products get caught in the intestinal tract and are fatal.
I have always been there to supervise when my babies get treats and ;Penny was actually sitting beside me when she was chewing on the denta-bone. She never choked on it but the end result was devastating.

FYI: I was responding to Pooch_luvr who had asked if anyone had heard of this sort of thing happening. I am sure she will understand where I am coming from.

You know, my dog got a Greenie obstruction because he would bite them in half and swallow the other half. That was 100% MY fault. I worked in an animal hospital at the time and knowing a whole lot about the medical side of animals, I did not have the common sense to watch him. He does not get greenies, or bullies, or rawhide because he simply can't chew each and every bite.

But guess what? I still give Greenies to my other dog, because she will chew each and every bite, and enjoys them. I say with all this stuff, and so does the vet I worked for; keep and eye out on how they are chewing things, and if they don't chew properly and gulp, then they should not have them.

If you think about it, a dog could choke on anything (considering lack of chewing!!!) but i have always heard the worst from greenies, poor golden retriever, hope there isn't any more of those nasty greenies in dog heaven!

That is very sad and I've heard similar stories, but I've been giving my pup greenies since he's been a puppy w/o a problem. I guess every dog is different and you hve to know your dog.

i also heard something bad about greenies. i did give my dogs greenies before, but after each time my pug crash vomited a large piece of greenie, i wouldnt let their mouth on it. also sometimes i could see there was a piece of greenie in his stool. so right now i prefer to let them have raw bones to chew on. i do clean their teeth every nite.
