Nutro dog food

Currently the greyhound rescue I volunteer with had receievd a donation of something like 100 bags of Nutro Large Breed Lamb and Rice (although the particlar variety that was donated is NOT sold in the US, but the ingredients are ALMOST identical to the US version).

The dogs do very well on this food with very firm poop and gas is almost non-existant (which for a greyhound is very hard to find!).[:D] That said their poops are HUGE!!! (Thus the comments made about it being grain heavy. . . ).  It is an average food that for the price I would personally NOT feed. If I am paying that kind of money for dog food, then I personally feel they shouldn't be loading up on cheap fillers. . . give me more meat please!  [:)]

For the same price as Nutro, I can feed Canidae, and that was my personal preference (thus both my greys were transitioned off  Nutro within the first week of living with me).
I do firmly believe that what works for your dog and budget is what you should use. SO my feeling on Nutro= not a bad food, but definately not worth the price tag they put on it!

barngirl; Nutro Ultra is a good food and if your dog is doing well on it that counts more than anyone's opinion.[;)]  Here is a link explaining how to interpet pet food labels;  [linkhttp://www.dogfoodproject.com/index.php?page=labelinfo101]http://www.dogfoodproject.com/index.php?page=labelinfo101[/link]

I feed Casey Nutro for years! The breeder had her on pedigree (what the heck!?!?), then I put her on Eukanuba, then changed it to Nutro, then to Excel, and then back to Nutro. She had always done fine on it until her later years. Her stool has been soft. but maybe it's because I have to pick it up at the apt complex I live at so I notice it more..I don't know..

So I've changed to Canidae this weekend! Hopefully that will work. Switched the pup too. Definently I higher quality food. But I was happy with Nutro all those years. I'm learning more about doggy nutrition now..so I'm more concerned for their health. You can learn a lot on this form. This is a hot topic!

Thank you all for the suggestions, ideas, and web links, I appreciate all of it!!! I'm still searching for canidae near me. I did a search located and both the stores they listed are no longer in buisness[:(], so I'm still hunting. As far as the nutro goes, Sport does seem to like the taste of it (he wouldn't even hardly touch the pedigree, but can you blame the poor guy YUCK!!!), and I can't really say anything about his stool because we're still struggling with worms which are affecting that aspect also. I guess until I can find canidae I'm going to stick with Nutro, but hopefully that wont be too much longer.

Nutro is what I would consider to be a mid grade food. Of their formulas, Ultra is best in my opinion. The site below is the easiest to read explanation of dog nutrition and choosing a food.

I agree. A mid grade, with an excellent marketing department food with a premium food price tag. For not much more or equal $$ you could buy a much better food than Nutro.

Agreed.  There are a ton of better foods out there.

I always say that if your dog is doing well on a low to midgrade food imagine how much better he would do on a premium food. Some brands may not work, but out of all the foods available, one or two have got to suit.

Too many people take mounds of shedding, bad breath, stinky poops, scurfy, odouress coats to be "just a doggy thing" and see these things as part and parcel of owning a dog. It's only when they change to a better food and all of these things dissapear that they realise they're dog wasnt doing so well after all.

Just a little food for thought [:)]

After Roxie began refusing Chicken Soup, I switched her to Nutro (only because she had loved a sample pack before ...).  So ... she had been eating Nutro Natural Choice Large Breed Puppy and doing very well.  Similar stools, similar feeding guidelines, blah, blah, and ... blah.  I did hate the fact that I was paying the same for Nutro that I paid for CS, but there was nothing I could do -- she just would not touch the CS with a ten-foot pole.

I tried Canidae.  B-O-M-B (my kitten also hated Felidae, by the way).  Darn.  She hated it more than the CS, I think.  Eagle Pack didn't have much success, either, except for the nasty fish formula (and I'm sure everyone has read why I loathed that crap).

Now I'm feeding her Nutro Ultra Large Breed Puppy.  Yeah, yeah, yeah ... I know ... it's not the greatest food in the world, especially compared to the amazing Innova.  But guess what?  I tried Innova before the Ultra.  Same results as Canidae and CS.  She obviously likes Nutro, it works well with her, and that is what we're sticking with for the time being.  At this point, I'm so sick of food changes that I don't think I'll mess with it for a very long time.

So ... to sum up a post of rambling idiocy, I don't think Nutro is horrible if a dog does well on it.  Mine does.  Ron's does.  Others do.

I am glad that you found a food your dog does well on. It can be a long battle for finding the right foods that not only work well with the dog but they also enjoy eating! I know i've had that problem...I say if your dog does well on it KEEP IT. Also, Nutro Ultra is a good food, the best in their line. Don't worry my pup would not even TOUCH Innova and my cat wouldn't touch Felidae! Funny how animals can be. [:)]

Glad you found something that works!! [sm=wink2.gif]

Thanks!  [:)]  I'm glad she's happy, too [:D].  We're definitely sticking with what works.

And the kitten eats Nutro Natural Choice Indoor Kitten formula.  She actually became ill after "sampling" the Felidae/Nutro mix.  I'm too paranoid to even consider an alternative food for her.

This is going to sound silly, but I only heard that "ass out of you and me" joke about a month ago -- for the first time ever.  LOL!  It was great then and even better now.  I'm bad to assume things, too.

    My name is Kenny.  [:)]

ETA: I'll update my profile to prevent false assumptions next time, Rachel (and change "Twin" to your real name)!  [;)]
