Animal fat

You know what, just forget this. I'm sorry I bothered.

    Why?

Didnt you get the answers you were looking for?

I think you got alot of useful info from these kind people who took the time to try and help you.

This was based on the mistaken belief that older dogs had lower nutritional requirements and were not well equipped to handle protein and fat. Recent studies actually show that older dogs have similar nutritional requirements as their younger counterparts, and actually require higher protein and fat!

This is what i've always thought. They're seniors, not aliens [;)]

OK Twin, I'll agree with you on the tad more protien and 10%fat. But what I don't get is why do they add too much, in my opinion, fiber for Senior dogs? Now that is treating them like aliens. lol

    Thank you for your opinions.

Goodness, this has turned into a rather contentious thread.

Lori?  Have you thought about EVO beef formula?  There are so darned many foods now, and many of them don't even make the list of ones that we talk about.

I'm looking at the WDJ best foods list and scanning for non-chicken foods.....lets see we've got Solid Gold MMillennia, Burns, Brown Rice and Ocean Fish, SG Hund-N-Flocken, lamb meal, Showbound Naturals, Lamb and Brown Rice,  TO, Lamb Barley & Apple, Wellness Super 5 Lamb Mix, Simple Food Solutions, Venison (also by Wellness).

Wysong, interestingly enough is made in my hometown of Midland MI.......now this is my own bias because I grew up there and it is the home of Dow Chemical AND Dow Corning.....if ANY of the ingredients are grown in or around Midland, they'd be suspect in my eyes.  Dow has polluted the air, the streams, rivers, and land for generations.  In the late 70's/early 80's they were guilty of contaiminating the drinking water with dioxins (from Agent Orange) so I'm not comfortable with anything edible that is produced in Midland.  Last summer I took my Mom down to visit her sister....I saw what appeared to be beautiful tomatoes for $8 a bushel....unheard of low price.  But, I opted to pay $12 per bushel HERE rather than eat anything grown in the soil around Midland......

I can't answer the animal fat questions so I realize my response here is OT, but I wanted to offer you some options.  Wysong doesn't appear to be a bad food, but, knowing what I know about Midland I wouldn't be comfortable feeding it.

I know I read an FDA article where they tested several foods and could not find any trace of the euthanasia cocktail, thereby quashing the rumor that such things happen, let alone not finding any trace of the plastic body bags or flea collars, all of which would survive the extrusion process and be therefore evident, if there at all.

willowchow, it sounds like Canidae Lamb & Rice could be a good choice for you. It is supposed to be out in Sept, and uses canola oil.

Unidentified ingredients are usually very low quality. AAFCO define this as "obtained from the tissues of poultry in the commercial processes of rendering or extracting. It consists predominantly of glyceride esters of fatty acids and contains no additions of free fatty acids. If an antioxidant is used, the common name or names must be indicated, followed by the words "used as a preservative".

Please explain to me what part of that statement by the AAFCO presents that poultry fat is only low quality meats?

Let's not get started on corn...

Oh please, lets get started on corn.   It is NOT BAD for dogs who do not have ALLERGIES to it, which makes up the MAJORITY of the canine population.  It is a perfectly good grain when used PROPERLY (as in it's not the first ingredient).

    use of low quality grains,

Please tell me which of those listed (Potato, Ground Brown Rice, Ground Oat Groats, Ground Corn) are low quality? I don't think so...

This upsets me because I am tired of seeing people pull apart every SINGLE ingredient in a food and say things like:
Why do you want to feed this food?
as if the food is so horrible the person is harming their dog by feeding it...I can't help but to find the paranoia amusing.  The ingredients listed are certainly a step above most grocery store foods, so I don't understand why it deserved such remarks.  I understand why it is important to educate someone on how to read/interpret labels and understand what they are buying, but it is also important to help people realize that not all premium foods work well for all dogs.  Lets not forget that...

-Willowchow- I think it is a good one to try if it works out for you and I agree with Kelly's suggestions of the new Canidae Lamb & rice [:)]

Thank you and I'm glad that I wasn't the only one who found the post offensive, especially with the finger shaking emoticon.

Has anyone else tried Ocean Blue?  That might be an option for me.  I can't find the ingredients though.

Ocean Blue as in T.O.'s Ocean Blue?
If so, yes. Ella never really LOVED it, but she had nice poops on it. I only used it for a week because she wasn't eating it well. I have switched to Nature's Variety Raw Instincts because she INHALED the sample I gave her like it was the best thing ever.

Timberwolf Ocean Blue? I fed one large bag of it. The dogs loved it, but I didn't notice anything special about the results from it and I got uncomfortable with the company so we never got any more. Here are the ingredients:

Low Ash White Fish Meal, Salmon, Potatoes, Sardine/Mackerel/Anchovy/Tuna Oils, Kelp, Alfalfa Leaf, Potassium Chloride, Carrot, Watercress, Spinach, Celery, Parsley, Fennel Seed, Blueberries, Cranberries, Pears, Figs, Thyme, Anise Seed, Ground Cinnamon Bark, Fenugreek, Garlic Pieces, Sunflower Seeds, Sesame Seeds, Apples, Taurine, Spirulina, Choline Chloride, Lecithin, Probiotics: (Lactobacillus Acidophilus, Lactobacillus Casei, Lactobacillus Lactis, Bacillus Bifidum, Streptococcus Diacetilactis, Bacillus Subtillus), Taurine, Mixed Tocopherols (a source of vitamin E), Lysine, Zinc Proteinate, Iron Proteinate, Manganese Proteinate, Thiamine, Methionine, Carnitine, Niacin, Vitamin A Supplement, Calcium Pantothenate, Riboflavin Supplement, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Iodine Proteinate, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Biotin, Folic Acid, Pyridoxine (a source of vitamin B6), Copper Proteinate, Selenium Proteinate, Cobalt Proteinate, Papain, Yucca Schidigera Extract

I agree with not picking apart each and every ingredient, but when rice is listed in four or five different ways, then it's clear that the main ingredient IS rice.

And I honestly see nothing wrong with mentioning the pollution problems in a city where a food is manufactured.  There is a lot of farming in and around that area and excuse me, but the RIVER has a name, but no one uses it anymore.....it's called CHEMICAL river, TOXIC stream, the sludge pot formerly known as the Titabawasee...... And this is the river that supplies the towns DRINKING WATER.   I grew up in that city.  TWO of my sisters have conditions that have a genetic componant BUT are triggered by enviromental factors....MS and Parkinsons.  That particular town has the HIGHEST rate of birth defects in the state, or it did the last time I checked.  It's really and truely a cesspool of pollution, and no matter how wonderful the ingredients in the food might be, you know darned good and well that at least SOME of them are grown right in the area, and frankly, that scares the spit out of me.  I could DRIVE to Midland, stock up on the food for next to nothing, but I still wouldn't feed it if you gave it to me.  I know too much about the area to be comfortable feeding it.

Glenda--Thank you for letting me know about Midland and the situation there.  I didn't know that and now am wondering if I should try it at all or call them and ask or what.  And, those comments that myself and others made were not directed at you, some remarks were made on the other page.

God, she needs a plain, one meat kibble, no barley, no chicken.  She can eat beef, turkey and fish fine.  Grains don't bother her.  I can't believe it's this hard to find a kibble for her.  I'm about to say forget it and she won't get one.
