    animal essential herbal multi-vitamin

So, when I went to get Ella's food today, I asked about a calcium supplement. She had sold out of hers, but she said that I could use this multivitamin and it would have enough calcium in it.

Does anyone use this for their dogs?
She said it's good to use when feeding raw.

Wait, why do you need a calcium supplement?  Are you feeding meat with no bone?  Because you can't feed the vitamin for that, it doesn't work that way.  The vitamin is balanced in itself, but you still need to balance your meat.

that's what I thought. I didn't think a multivitamin would be enough. But she gave it to me to sprinkle on Ella's meat anyway.
Can't hurt to add the vitamins, right?
I'm going to do the eggshell thing, but since she gave me a sample of this, I was just curious as to if others had used it and if so, what the results were.

No, you can give her the vitamin but still do the eggshells.

Wait, I'm confused. The vitamin is a supplement, meant to be added to food - wouldn't adding more just be doubling up on calcium?

And I'm confused again (knew I shouldn't have had that last drink with dinner [:D]) - does this vitamin have calcium in it?http://www.animalessentials.com/2multi.html It has D-Calcium Pantothenate, but that is vitamin B5.

you know, I didn't get to read what was in it.
I got to their website and it confused me. But I think I miss things on certain websites because of using linux kubuntu and I haven't adjusted to the different fonts and sizes.
I clicked on the link and I didn't see any calcium, but I lack knowledge with pet vitamins.

She can give the vitamin but it's not going to "balance" calcium to phos in her boneless meat.  The vitamin is balanced in itself but the meat needs to be balanced.  You don't want to be over feeding calcium either but I really don't think a multivitamin is going to do that anyway.

I learned about this from mordanna or lilian when she used to post here.  Maybe I can dig up the old thread.

Your gal might have a lot of experience with foods and sups, but THIS is not something I'd trust to her.....a multivitamin can NOT begin to address the calcium needed to balance the calcium/phosperous ratio since it's not formulated for a specific amount of boneless raw....you'd have to keep shoving multi vits to get up to the proper calcium amount and heaven knows what other stuff you'd be ODing her on.....

I believe Wysong makes a product to add to your food if feeding raw, that will balance out the food,
I think it is called AddLife or Call of the Wild.

    Glenda-
How many eggs do you think I'll need to use before I get enough eggshells to make enough powder for one meal?
    • Gold Top Dog
Oh boy...I've honestly never measured the output per eggshell.  Mine never get thrown away....whether I'm baking or using them in the dogs stew or our own occassional egg meal, I automatically rinse them and stick them in a bag to process. It was funny when my oldest son was home at Thanksgiving....he got in the fridge late one nite and found a HUGE bag of eggshells and couldn't for the life of him figure out WHY his somewhat escentric mother was saving EGGSHELLS of all things..... Maybe try 6?  That'll give you enough for a few days at least.  For a single meal?  I'm just not sure because you've got to know what and how much of what you are feeding......the 1/2 tsp per pound of boneless meat is an AVERAGE because some meats are higher phosperous than others.....

Well, I'm only feeding her ground beef that's 73% lean. And half a pound a day, at that. I probably should at least add 1/2 a tsp.
How would I find out the phospherous level in the meat? I probably wouldn't, would I?

NO, 1/2 tsp is per POUND.  Mordy would know....hopefully Sooner will provide an email addy.....

d'oh. Sorry, I'm still waking up. I'll read this and reference it and do more research and print out, etc... before just adding the eggshell.

According to [linkhttp://www.nutritiondata.com/facts-B00001-01c21c8.html]this[/link], 1 lb. raw 75% (they didn't have 73%) hamburger contains 95.2 mg calcium and 657 mg phosphorus.

[linkhttp://www.njboxers.com/faqs.htm]This page[/link] has some good FAQs about calcium; including this: What is the bone to meat ratio? Ideally, it is anywhere from 1:1 to 2:1 calcium:phosphorus (bone/eggshell:meat).
