I agree with Baileys Mom. If you want to feed vegetables feed Beneful, there are plenty of vegetable on the bag [:)]

That's great.  Glad you're catching up with us LizziCollie. [8D]

As far as my recommendations of foods.  Please visit your local pet specialty store.  You can not find quality foods at the grocery store.  Please be aware that Beneful has lots of sugar and, therefore, your dog may not want anything else but Beneful.  So it may not be easy to switch your dog to a healthy food, but it is well worth the effort.

Look at the ingredients list on what ever food you choose. The ingredients list tells you more about the food than anything else.

As mentioned before an ingredient list is listed from the first word to the last in terms of weight.  So the first ingredient is what there is most of in the food and the most important ingredient. Dogs need meat, meat should be the first ingredient.

As far as the quality of the meat goes, it should be specific.  For example, it should say chicken, not poultry and certainly not meat (which can be anything and some really gross things).  Any meat that says "by-product" is just that and usually means that the food is low quality.  Although some will argue on this point.  Avoid "animal digest" too.

Avoid any food who's ingredient includes hulls, or husks, or cellulose (for example corn hulls). These are indigestable ingredients, or fillers.

Avoid foods with any colors or any soft squishy kibble.  This is usually a good sign that the food company put more $ into marketing than quality ingredients.

Avoid foods that say sugar, or corn starch, or corn syrup.

That will give you a basis.

Depending on your price range and availability, the following foods are very healthy and tasty.

Eagle Pack Chicken Holistic has lots of veggies and fruits for real and is designed for small and medium breeds.

    Chicken Soup for dogs.

    Nature's Variety

Royal Canin Mini Specialty (specifically designed for fussy eaters)

    Solid Gold Wee Bits

Pro Plan small bites (not as good as the above mentioned, but again depending on availability and price range)

People have to be  VERY careful being vegetarian. I have learned that the hard way. I will never do that to myself again. A dog should never be forced to be veg. Find out the brands they sell there so we can find a great food for your dog.

Can you keep the dog cool? Llasa's can't take heat, flat face, not from hot climates. I have a Shih Tzu and I keep her very cool all summer. Heat is dangerous for some breeds.

You have to be VERY careful on a meat-eating diet as well. Why do you think so many people have heart disease/high cholesterol/etc? Meat. Most meats aren't good for you. You just have to eat a relatively balanced diet. I used to be really unhealthy because all I ate were potatoes, ramen, and junk food.

You could be making your dog sick. Give him some meat........that's what they eat, it's what they need. If you dont want to handle the meat, let your dad do it. Please don't take offense, just stating facts.

www.dogfoodproject.com will give you an idea of some of the better foods, and you can order some of  them online, I'm sure.  Your dog may just be "addicted to carbs" same as some people get when they are eating a lot of grain.  This suggestion from Lizzie Collie makes the most sense:

Can you feed him kibble and supplement with vegetables?

If he wont eat just give him a certain amount of food, wait 20 minutes and take it away. Do the same for every meal until he learns to eat what is on his plate.

He will probably not starve himself (do make sure he has water).  After all, in the wild, the rabbit doesn't run by every day at five o'clock.

he doesnt eat dog food, veg or nonveg...can u pleez tell me some way out

I think he said his dog doesn't even eat kibble, maybe you should try to mix  warm water with the kibble, maybe he will ea it, or try mixing an egg with the kibble to mak it tast better.

Hi - as mentioned before the original post is from August 2006.   The OP hasn't been back to this thread or posted anywhere on idog since August 24th, 2006.

Sorry, I'm an idiot, I didn't check the dates on threads I was looking at when I was doing searches for certain topics.
