    B-I-G PROBLEM...need help

My dog ..... has been causing soume trouble to my family and me since some time.
He is a 9 mth old lhasa apso....
We all love him a lot....
He used to be crazy about food when he was a small puppy. Now,he doesnt eat ANYTHING...n i mean anything vegitarian....n as for non veg,he eats it when he's in the mood.We are a veg family, only my dad is nonveg...so we dont eat nonveg too often...we sometimes get chicken or liver for him..which he eats mostly...but he needs to learn to eat something veg too..cuz we almost never eat non veg...but getting it specially for him is a problem sometimes....he doesnt eat dog food, veg or nonveg...can u pleez tell me some way out....cuz this is not sufficient nutrition for him.We actually just take "dal and roti" (these are indian dishes...just contain wheat and proteins) and stuff it in his mouth...then he eats!!!!!!
i liv in india where heat is around 39 celcius these days

Two things might be happening. One, the heat might be curbing your dog's appetite. The other is that dogs really crave meat, so if you want to feed him veg, you'll have to trick him into enjoying it, probably. Dairy products can help your dog accept the vegetable proteins, and so can egg, if you can accept these in your household. You really need to get some expert help on feeding your dog veg or mostly veg - dogs do best on meat-based protein since the amino acid profile is different than plant-based proteins.

Here is a web page to get you started: http://www.ehow.com/how_5339_dog-vegetarian-diet.html

Here's a site with some recipes - I don't know how balanced they are and whether the ingredients are readily available to you, but it's worth looking at. http://www.seefido.com/html/vegetarian_dog_food_recipes.htm

Also, small dogs can be picky. Others on this site can give you some hints on training her to healthier eating habits.

    Good luck!

Can you feed him kibble and supplement with vegetables?

If he wont eat just give him a certain amount of food, wait 20 minutes and take it away. Do the same for every meal until he learns to eat what is on his plate.

Forgive me if I'm misunderstanding you but are you saying that you've been feeding your dog primarily grains and veggies with occasional meat? If so he may be ill... dogs' diets should be primarily meat-based. I understand that your family is vegetarian, mine is too [:)], but that diet just won't do for dogs. If you don't want to buy meat he should start eating kibble regularly... but I also think he may need a workover by a vet to see if he has any physical problems that are affecting his appetite.

Don't forget, though, that the OP stated that they live in India. As I understand it, some Indians believe (quite firmly) in reincarnation, and will not use any animal products, at all...

Of course, if the dad is eating meat, then it's not so much a religious issue....

I'd do tough love. Pick a good, meat based kibble. Read up, talk  to the vet, decide how much he needs. Put down half that, twice a day, for 15 minutes. Whatever he doesn't eat, is picked up. He gets no treats, and is offered only water, between meals. He will learn to eat his food.

As long as it's not vegetarian! It takes alot of know how on canine nutrition to formulate a complete and balanced vego diet for a canine who's main source of nutriton should be meat, the whole thing just doesnt make sense [&o] Stuffing food in his mouth is not the way to go either.I am sure if you served him up a proper meat based diet he would dive in and probably give you no more worries! My dogs are piggies, but i know they would rather starve then eat even 1 meal without meat,i just couldnt and wouldnt expect them to eat it.

I would take your dog to the vet for a complete check up as i wouldnt be surprised if he is malnourished and along with this often comes more serious ailments. Then put him on a meat based diet and watch him thrive [:D]

Natural Balance has a Vegetarian Formula.

Would not recommend that for a dog, but each to his own...[8|]

    Yes...it aint a religious  issue

dogs rarely hold religious beliefs about not eating meat. Trying to force your religious beliefs on a dog seems rather odd to me, especially since in this case it's likely to damage the dog's health. Feed the poor thing some meat. If you can't bear to handle meat, buy a good dog food.

Out of respect for Glenda and in honor or political correctness, I refrain from comment.

You can't believe the restraint it took.  I actually had a reply typed out.  IMHO, a pretty funny one too.  But I zapped it.  Aren't you proud?  [:D]

Ankit, Dal is very good for your dog( lentils) but roti is just going to fill him with empty calories. Butter is not very good for a dog and I know alot of butter goes into your cooking.
If you would like to get veggies into him, try steaming them.
Your best bet would be to pick up some kibble and add the steamed veggies to it.
I am not certain of the types of kibble they sell in India.
We have hundreds of different kinds here. Have you tried giving him boiled chick peas as a snack? My dogs just love them and they are also high in protein.
I wish you would have been on here a month ago. We just then returned from Ludhiana and I would have brought you some kibble.

Phoenixandkit dogs are not vegetarians, and are not meant to be either. It is not fair to push a humans beliefs onto a dog.If you want to be a vego, good on you,but your dog doesnt,so please dont enforce 'you're' beliefs onto him.

What brands of dog food do you have over there? Perhaps we can help you pick out a good one.

Maybe you could try feeding (if they have it where you are) Beneful. Bailey eats dry beneful with some wet beneful on top.  I suggested this to you because, although it does contain meat it also contains a lot of veggies and calcium. Maybe this will work for you?
