New Eagle Pack Formulas

    • Gold Top Dog
I called brewers yeast "iffy" because I have heard that many dogs can be allergic to it.

I don't think Eagles allergy formulas are good at all. Sure, they have a lot of healthy "extras", but when a dog has allergies, they can't handle them anyway. For example, one "Eagle allergy formula" has a protein source, followed by a grain, a different grain, then egg product, brewers yeast, etc.
As for the beet pulp thing...I don't think its BAD, I just think they could use a higher quality source of fiber. There are tons of other super premium foods that don't have beet pulp.
*sigh* I would love to feed it, but (just like all the other foods I want to feed her) it won't work out.

I have been using the EP Duck formula, but I am also trying the Natural Balance Venison and Potato allergy formula,to early to tell how they might tolerate it,I purchased The NP Canned and dry.

In Eagles brochure it says about salt:
Only a minimum amount is added to meet government standards.  That must mean that the OTHER quality food has to have it also....or should.

That's what I just switched to and Gingerbread is doing just swimmingly on it so far. [:)] The carbohydrate source though is brown rice, not potato.

If you want a "true" allergy formula get Natural Balance. They are the ONLY foods that I have found to actually contain 1 protein and 1 carbohydrate and THAT'S IT! [sm=wink2.gif]

    3 Varieties:

California Natural (either Lamb & Rice or Chicken & Rice) also has only 1 protein and 1 carbohydrate source:

I can't get Natural Balance without ordering it and paying shipping; besides I prefer Eagle Pack's formulas because the first ingredient is meat meal ( their holistic kibbles are 40% meat meal), whereas the first ingredient in the Natural Balance duck and fish formulas is a carb. Anyway, the only way to determine IF your dog has food allergies is to do an elimination diet ( one protein and one carb which the dog hasn't had before, like pork and buckwheat).  If he improves after being on the elimination diet, you then reintroduce the ingredients from his old food one at a time, starting with the most likely cause, which is the protein source, until he reacts. That way you know which ingredient he is allergic to and can avoid foods with that ingredient; that's how I learned Jessie is allergic to chicken. It may be easier to simply choose a fcommercial food with one protein and one carb, but by actually knowing if your dog has a food allergy and what he is allergic to, you have a much wider range of foods to choose from.

That's true they do have 1 protein/1 carb. But, I didn't list these because they both contain Sunflower Oil...more likely of an allergen than Canola Oil in Natural Balance.

That's one of the reasons I chose Natural Balance.... I wanted an "allergy" food that didn't have flaxseed (the oil is okay), sunflower oil,  or brewer's yeast. I also really like that Natural Balance has yucca and kelp.

Agree with your post, just wanted to say that according to [linkhttp://www.nutritiondata.com/facts-B00001-01c20fB.html]this[/link], 38g of potato contains 31.7g water, so the 'true' first ingredient of NB would most likely be the meat. The duck contains potato, meat, meal and the fish contains potato, meat, meal, meal.

Good point Kelly; Thanks for the information about potatoes. I guess it's like when meat is listed as the first ingredient; after processing and the water is removed, it moves down the list. The site you linked to a great place for nutritional information.

We got a new shipment of EP and I finally got to check the bags (with the updated look). The Holistic Lamb has a new look and a new ingredient list.

Here's the old list from the website:

    Ingredients:

Lamb Meal, Ground Brown Rice, Oatmeal, Chicken Fat (Preserved with Natural Mixed Tocopherols and Citric Acid), Dried Beet Pulp, Flaxseed, Brewers Dried Yeast, Rice Bran, Dried Egg Product, Salt, Potassium Chloride, Air Dried Peas, Dried Carrots, Taurine, Inulin, Glucosamine Hydrochloride, DL-Methionine, Vitamin A Acetate, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Vitamin E Supplement, Riboflavin Supplement, Vitamin B12 Supplement, d-Pantothenic Acid, Niacin Supplement, Choline Chloride, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Thiamine Mononitrate, Folic Acid, Ascorbic Acid, Biotin, Rosemary Extract, Inositol, Dehydrated Kelp, Polysaccharide Complexes (sequestered) of Zinc, Iron, Manganese, Copper and Cobalt, Potassium Iodate, Sodium Selenite, Yucca Schidigera Extract, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus casei, Enterococcus faecium, B. Subtillus, Bacillus lichenformis, Bacillus coagulins, Aspergillus oryzae and Aspergillus niger.

Now, from memory (since I don't have the bag in front of me) they have added ground white rice after the brown rice, moved the oatmeal behind the fat, removed dried brewers yeast and rice bran altogether, all the veggies are listed only as the veggie (not the air dried version) and moved them up on the list, added fruits like cranberry etc and herbs, moved kelp way up the list.
I believe I am remembering that they removed the chicken fat, but don't hold me to that. I'll up date this afternoon after work!

Sounds like good changes! If they really did remove chicken fat and brewer's yeast then Gingerbread might be able to eat the Lamb variety. Unless the flaxseed was the problem... [&:]

Just to clarify, the venison and rice is the only NB allergy formula that contains kelp. I went [sm=eek.gif] when you said kelp, thinking that they'd changed their formulas[;)] Emma is *very* allergic to kelp.

    Not happy.

    Not happy at all.

In their canned foods, the old Duck and Oatmeal is now Duck and Chicken. I suspect June is sensitive to Chicken... I'm trying to get AWAY from chicken. Why does everything have to have Chicken? Death to chicken.
