    Whats the best Dog food??

    Hi All

We have a 4.5 month old German Shepard, who Eats Kirklands Signature super premium puppy food(chicken and rice) Since we have gotten him, this is the second puppy food we have tried, he was purnia puppy food before.
the thing is, his poop is always mushy (sorry) best I can explain it.Not runny.
we also have been placing an egg mixed with his food, so i just dont know what it could be. should i try another brand of puppy food.
HELP, He`s had all his shots, dewormed.

Well, I can't tell you what food is the best, becuase each dog is differnent and will respond to foods differently. If his stools are soft, then maybe he is getting too much?? If you want to switch foods here are some more you can try that are (in my opinion) better than Kirkland.
    Innova
    Solid Gold
    California Natural
    Natures Variety
    Wellness
    Blue Buffalo
    Eagle  Pack
    Sensible Choice
    Pinnacle

There are more, but these pop into my head right now. Also, some people add plain unpsiced, canned pumpkin to the food to firm up stools

My german shepherds eat Innova, all life stages from the time they are weaned from momma.  They also get homecooked for dinner.

Be careful that you are not overfeeding.  That's a common cause of soft stools, BUT both of those foods mentioned have a LOT of grains and stuff a dogs system can't use so it comes right out......and most often in the form of soft stools.

The food that is best for one may not be best for another. Having a large breed puppy you want to be careful about protein and mineral percentages. He probably needs to be on a large breed puppy food or an all life stages food like Canidae.

thanks for your replys, He is a very thin puppy, infact he seems not to be interested in food at all.

Thin is actually better.  I keep my shepherds on the thin side.....not thin enough to see hip bones, but thin.  Easier on the joints.

Thanks, Im gonna go out and buy Innova for him, hope he likes it.

Innova is a great food, Bailey loves it and the cost is turning out to be less, which shocked me... because I feed so much less of it to her.  I do think it contributed to runny poops for a week or two but that can be expected with any food right when you switch, and its a very high quality which can initally be a shock to their bellies as it gets rid of the other stuff it doesnt need and adjusts to new food.

Runny poops can be a sign of so many things.  I would say during the switch and for a good while after you should use an enzyme such as Prozyme which helps the body absorb the nutrients better.... also makes the switching of foods a little easier.  Just a thought.  Good luck!

Just a thought...but when I give my  Shepherd raw egg she gets pudding poop.. maybe you should stop the egg if its raw or cook it first before giving see if that helps..

The egg, with the shell, shouldn't cause pudding poop. The egg, shell-less, is not balanced with calcium. Shell-less eggs give my dogs (small dogs) runny poop, but when I feed the shell, they do fine.

Interesting.  I tried giving Sally the shell with the egg and she just licks the egg goo out leaves the shell.  Never had a poop issue though...
