Wondering about feeding raw some of the time

Ive read some older posts before on this, was wondering if it wouldnt hurt to sometimes feed my dog raw meats, for a meal, like the wings and organs etc etc..right now i finally found kibble that he TRULY eats and likes, but ive found out he is sort of a grazer with eating....not one to gobble it all in morning and evening...more so when its quieter or when he feels really hungry....But with callie saying about the raw chicken wings for his back teeth, thought  its not exp to buy that stuff, so why not try it a few times a wk ....he is 14 month old beagle/shep blend and is no more then 35lbs or a bit less....I cook us fresh veggies all the time, so that we know we have givin him, greens and carrots as well as fruits....what about any type of rice , or is that not something he needs...Id still keep his kibble out.....any thoughts from you folks who do this?  im not about making him homemade meals 2x a day, just thought he can get meat and veggies for a meal a few times a wk, something like that

    Thanks

    Nancy

My crew get raw about once a week.  Organ in a totally raw diet should average 5% of the total intake, so don't overdo on organs.  Heart, by the way, is a muscle, not organ.  Fresh veggies, without a ton of butter or sauces on them, are fine.  Rice doesn't really add anything to their diet.

ok, so can you explain your once a week feeding?  just for 1 dog, lets say...what do you give him, kind of meat etc., and is it cut up and how much of it do they get? and you throw in veggies too, and that their meal for morning  only or is it the whole days worth.  so if i plan to give my dog raw and veggies too say, a few times a wk....he is 14 months old and weighs about 35lbs, im giving it to him in the morning and at nite?  chicken wings or the neck or back or turkey neck and organs, whatever i decide, none of it gets boiled even for 30 seconds? cut it up? or no and about how much ...he is average energy level most times...

I sometimes give Luke a little bit of raw. Sometimes one meal a day and the other is kibble, right now he hasn't had anything in a few months. For Luke, I did have to smash them up a bit the first few times and let them thaw pretty well. Usually, I just give him a chicken wing. Now I can just take it from the freezer and give it to him. I don't cook it at all. For him, if he gets it, I subtract the equivalent amount in calories from his kibble for the day. I don't do any veggies, but I imagine most are neglible in terms of calories. I'm with Glenda about not doing rice. I also don't know that I'd do it for a picky eater, as I'd worry about him choosing to hold out for it. I also would absolutely not leave it out for free feeding. You don't want raw meat sitting out rotting. Either you eat it, or it disappears.

     Thanks

Id not let it sit out.. and i know he will def. eat it up....Dont plan on making it all raw diet, just maybe a cpl times or something a wk....he does LIKE the kibble he has, but again, he is not one of those dogs, never has been since i got him, to eat 1 whole meal in minutes, then another at dinner time....i put a whole days worth of good quality kibble in his bowl.....and come the end of the nite most times its almost gone, other times its not...ill measure whats left next morning and add a bit to keep it the same...thats just how he eats...So i thought it looks so boring just dry kibble all the time, and maybe some raw would be nice for him and help with his teething

Way OT, but the idea of food not being devoured in a minute is a total foreign concept. Big Smile

     LOL; same here.

To the OP; since he's still a puppy ( you said he was teething), I wouldn't replace more than one meal a week with raw. His growing body needs the right amount of nutrients. When you do offer raw, don't overdo the beef liver. It has a whopping amount of vitamin A ; one ounce has over 4000 IU's. It also has more copper than your pup needs. Chicken liver is also high in vitamin A, about twice as much as your pup needs. For example Jessie is 62 pounds and needs about 2400 IU's. Not trying to throw a lot of numbers at you, but moderation with liver is key.

     Tiffy and jessies-mom, thanks

Tiffy my sister has a corgi just like yours...she is a piglet too... her food is gone almost as fast as she puts the bowl down....she would eat everything in site if you let her, and fast too........ Not all dogs eat their meal slow, and not all fast...I wish mine was just consistent from day 1 of us getting him....most dogs ive had or seen, ate the food when put down and that was that...not this one......

My dog is almost a yr and half old Jessies mom....from what ive read about his strong chewing desire, he is still cutting back teeth even at that age, hence why he chews im guessing....funny how a 1 yr old dog is at times considered an adult , yet other times still a pup til about 2yrs old... He has his dry kibble and i gave him raw chicken wings yesterday. He ate them up in no time, and im guessing that felt good in his back gums

The larger dogs, such as Labs, take longer to mature. Jessie wasn't fully grown until she was about 16 months old.
