Wellness or Bluebuff?

    Wellness or Bluebuff?

I have decided to switch from Proplan to something with better ingredients. What is everyone's experience with Wellness Just for Puppy and BlueBuff chicken and rice? I'm assuming it comes down to the dog's preference but I would like some additional opinions.

My dog, Ava is on Wellness although she isn't crazy about it.  But her fur is very nice and she seems well on it.  I give her the one for small dogs.  she weighs 8 1/2 lbs.  I do know that some of Wellness for larger dogs has  been recalled though.

I have never tried Wellness because I had heard complaints of dirty teeth on Wellness.  Now, however, soem Wellness foods are on recall and I personally wouldn't take a chance with anything.

Blue is a good quality food.  I did stop using Blue when they were playing around with the ingredients, but I've gone back.

Both are high quality foods.  Get a small bag and see how it goes.

I have one dog highly prone to skin yeast infections, so always have to use grain free foods.  And I found some formulas are too high in protein for my dogs, so I have to stay around 28%.  Keep and eye on your dog and see how it goes.

What about Taste of the Wild? It seems a little more affordable and still contains good ingredients.

Taste of the Wild is also involved in the recalls. It is a Diamond brand.

It seems to me like they have all been recalled at some point. I'm starting to think i should stick with ProPlan since I havent had any issues. I'll probably be feeding him close to 60 lbs a month too so some of these brands would be quite costly.

I feed Precise to my normal dogs, and they've never been involved in a recall. They make their foods in their own plant, in Texas. It's less expensive than Pro Plan for their basic formulas (the holistic formulas are pricier of course). I have one dog on a prescription diet.

There are quite a few excellent companies that have stayed away from Diamond. Champion Pet Foods, and Fromm are among them.

Thanks for all of your responses, I decided to go with the Blue Buff Chicken and Rice for Puppies, it sounds like a solid food.

One of the things about better quality dog foods, is that you are able to feed less because they are more calorie dense.  The difference for my dog, who is 14.5 lbs, is small, maybe only a 1/4 cup or so more than what he currently eats, but for a bigger dog, obviously the different is going to be bigger.

Blue Buffalo was a voluntary recall several years back - they actually pulled all their cans off the shelf for a LONG time - unlike the current recalled brands which are still out there...

I fed Wellness for a while, but for the price, I'd rather stick with Blue Buffalo for my three dogs and cats.

One last question, my dog is a lab mix, maybe pointer or some other lanky breed. He is not very broad but instead has a long tail and long legs like you would expect to see with a pointer/vizla etc. He was 32 lbs at 17 weeks yet he doesn't have a huge frame. I've heard weight estimates from 50 - 70 lbs. Do you think it's fine to feed him the standard puppy food as opposed to the large breed formula? I know the two differ in protein levels but when I look at the BlueBuff differences it seems to come down to fat content instead of protein. I have him on standard right now and was just wondering if I should move to large breed.

     Thanks in advance.

There's a difference in minerals, too. I'd feed a large breed puppy food, or an all life stages formula.
