Did you know that millions of euthanizd dogs and cats wind up in your animal's food? It's true! President of AAFCO admits pets in pet food. Even the EPA admits to this! Still not sure if it's true? Check out this YouTube video if you aren't too squeamish - please be forewarned it is very disturbing! What happens to euthanized dogs and cats?

The following is straight from the FDA's website. I strongly suggest everybody go and take a look. It contains the results from a test by the Center for Veterinary Medicine, (CVM) investigating the presence of pentobarbital (the chemical agent used to euthanize cats and dogs) in pet foods, and the list of Ideabrand names which tested positive. What they say:

"There appear to be associations between rendered or hydrolized ingredients and the presence of pentobarbital in dog food. The ingredients Meat and Bone Meal (MBM), Beef and Bone Meal (BBM), Animal Fat (AF), and Animal Digest (AD) are rendered from sources that could include euthanized animals." Read Here FDA, CVM test results: which pet foods tested POSITIVE for pentobarbital some surprising, some not so much. A sampling of some brands which tested positive- Nutro, Ol' Roy, Kibbles N Bits, Pro Plan. (The Beerhighest levels were found in Ol' Roy and Kibbles N Bits.) But there are many more... please go and check it out!

And some more food for thought- dogs have been domesticated for Ideathousands of years, and yet meat-meal based kibble, which is what is used today, has only been around since the 1930's. That's just one generation. How confident are you that they're getting it right?

I believe that information is old.

I believe that they do not do that anymore.

I read it was false.  I will look to see where I read it and post it if I can find it.

I have been doing extensive research on this topic. The CVM study was done in 1998, however I have personally contacted Kibbles n Bits, Dad's, Nutro, ProPlan, and Ol Roy, asking whether they had re-tested their product since the study. Only Nutro and Kibbles n Bits bothered to reply, and neither has re-tested their product for pentobarbital since testing positive in the CVM study. This clearly shows their lack of compassion towards at-risk pets and their concerned owners, and a blatant disregard towards the health of the animals their product is intended for.

If you are referring to the later study by the CVM, in which they tested the foods for dog and cat DNA, the testing was incomplete. The manufacturers claimed the pentobarbital was from euthanized horses. No dog or cat DNA was found, however neither was any horse DNA. In fact, of the foods they tested, four did not yield any DNA results whatsoever, and of those four, two tested positive for pentobarbital. DNA breaks down very easily when subjected to the high heat and extensive processing which is used in making pet food, so the results are not surprising. If anything, I would think it would have prompted the CVM to study the issue further. Instead, they dropped the subject entirely, which I find incredibly suspicious.

The EPA allows for euthanized animals in the manufacturing of pet food, no laws have changed in that regard since the study, so there is no reason to assume that anything has changed. Clearly there are not enough restrictions on the pet food industry to ensure the safety of their product. That is precisely why I have posted this petition for everyone to sign. I hope you will consider signing it too!

I'll put my money where my mouth is, meaning I buy foods I'm OK with (OK with the ingredients, where they are processed, how they are processed) and don't buy foods I'm not OK with.
