    good food for 'active' dogs

    Hi gang,

At a recent vet appointment I mentioned that my Aussie Mix, Brittany, always seems like she is starving.  She eats her food insanely fast (I bought a slow feeder so at least she is breathing during meals) and goes wild for treats.  Its helpful with training that she is so food motivated but I was worried that I wasn't feeding her enough.  The vet did not think she needed more food but recommended I try a food for active dogs that has more protein.

Can anyone recommend a good type of dry food in this category that doesn't break the bank.  She is currently eating Iams Proactive Health which she seems to like....a lot.

    Thanks gang!

How old is she? When my aussies were growing, and until about 2 yrs old, it was hard to keep weight on them. Neiko would eat about 4 cups per day of innova evo, which is a lot for such high protein food. After they hit about 2, things slowed down. Neiko still eats the most out of the 3 at 2 cups per day. The girls only eat 1 cup per day. Im feeding them earthborn primitive natural right now, which you can google to see the ingredients. Theres a lot of food choices out there and its hard to say what will work for every dog. You need to play around with formulas to see what works. Check out protien and fat contents plus the calories per serving. Stay away from foods with a lot of filler, such as corn, and go for food that has protein in the meal form, such as turkey meal, chicken meal, etc. Be aware that a lot of companies use potatoe to increase the protein content. Thats not really bad but dont be fooled into paying more for something that is more potatoe than meat or fish.

We feed Native Level 3 and 4 to our sled dogs... I love, love. love it and you don't get much more active than sled dogs :) Coats are great, stool is small and solid and they enjoy it (palatability).

She's still quite young, about 18 months.  She's a rescue and we are not certain of her actually birthday but she's definitely still a puppy.  That's good advice Jewlieee, thank you.

Native Level 3 would be a good choice. Maybe you should also consider raw meat if your vet agrees.

my 7 year old aussie is eating Blue Buffalo. he doesn't do well on grain free foods, that coupled with his thyroid issues led to a lot of weight loss. he's still VERY active - and does well with this food.
