I started in regular obedience years ago, but when Rally came along, it was just a lot of fun!! I think newbies should start in Rally because of the fun factor. It's also a good venue for dogs that compete in other sports, and want to transition to regular obedience.

The complaints I have about Rally is the seriousness with which some people compete. For me, the seriousness comes in regular obedience and you should have enjoyment with your dog in Rally. Personally, the AKC Rally RAE title is of no interest, because I'd rather use the entry money for a herding trial. My other complaint is how small the rings have become! In the beginning, the rings were large and you could really move out. Now I can hardly take one or two steps between signs. Oh well, every time I feel sorry for myself, somebody comes along with a giant breed and makes it look easy, and then I feel like a big wuss.

With 7 dogs (6 Border collies) to entertain, training is the game of choice!!!  Our little midlle aged inherited Rat Terrier has also been introduced to Rally and obedience and she loves the individual attention. I guess we'll get her PAL number, and start letting her compete too.
