Puppy and Raw

    Puppy and Raw

This came up in a conversation last night with my training partner.

I'm trying to decide if I want to start my pup on a raw diet right from the start or if I want to feed kibble for the first year.  My partner thinks I should feed raw from the beginning.

My worry is messing up his growth. I know that people do feed puppies raw but I've fed kibble for so long that I'm worried. Lol!

Thoughts, Suggestions, Advice??  For the record, I'm not getting my pup for another 1.5 years. I just want to do the research now so I'm ready and not freaking out when he's home. Lol

Get a consult! Seriously. It will make you feel SO much better.

I don't do raw, unless it's premade, balanced, for puppies. Beyond my comfort zone.

    Amen to the consult recommendation!!!

When Cher joined our family, I was not planning on a puppy.  I didn't feel like I was ready to attempt feeding a puppy raw so I went with kibble with raw additions.  Now, after a consult, I feel like I have a good grasp of what she needs, so when the last of her kibble is gone, she will be a raw dog as well.

Who would I speak to about a consult?? I'm more then willing to spend the money if it means I'm not messing up my pup. Lol

Thanks! I'll be sure to check it out once I have a bit more coffee in my system. Lol

I did consults on Bevo, & Brutus with Monica Segal.  She has also done one for Brinxx, that I use for everyone else.  After tweaking Brinxx's recipe a little to use it for Cher, she did a diet analysis to make sure that it was balanced & appropriate for her.

I *think* that Jennie uses Sabine Contreras.

I would recommend either of them.  I went with Monica because her wait list, at the time, was about 2 weeks shorter than Sabine's.

Hmmm how much did it cost? Approximately?

I think I paid ~$200 for a full diet consult, with 8 weeks of support (which meant she'd tweak and change my diet, as needed, for that time). I recently paid $49 for a diet made of half commercial and half home prepared, with no support. You'll probably want the support, especially with a puppy. I used Sabine, and was ridiculously happy. I'd gladly use Monica, though, if Sabine were unavailable for whatever reason (Sabine has an AWESOME JRT, though, and I'm sort of envious of Quigley's accomplishments!).

I paid around $250 for a full consult with Monica.  I got 8 weeks of support as well, during which she tweaked things to get the diet perfected.  I, literally ,emailed her 2-3 times daily for the first 4 weeks, & she was great.  I got super quick replies, & she was always willing to try something else.

Thanks so much!! 200 - 250$ Sounds really reasonable considering there's support.

It really gives me something to think about. I'll keep tweaking Sandy's diet and when the time comes, I hope I'll be ready to tackle raw with a puppy.

It was WELL worth the money.

There's also the option of doing something like The Honest Kitchen. I am so happy with it, I'd probably use it as a base if I wanted to feed an all raw diet.  Bean gets a kibble base, and she's totally fine with that, and it's easy to handle, for training purposes. Jewel gets THK as her base, and since I don't train NEAR as much with her, it's worked out great.

I was looking into THK for Maze since she doesn't like bones.

ETA: And my pet store doesn't carry THK.... *bangs head on desk* They do carry 2 other brands that I've never heard of thou... Tongue Tied

I order it online, usually. Ask your pet supply place if they can order it for you. *Often*, they can, but  don't keep it on the shelf for lack of demand.

    The Ice Pups are AWESOME.
