The Honest Kitchen, again

    The Honest Kitchen, again

I put the girls on THK since we have a teeny tiny frige and not much space for our food, much less their rmbs and such. I am still going to use raw toppers though.

Anyway, I figured out that once you add water, the cost of even the most expensive food, Embark, is 1.91 a pound.  Down to their most economical food, Keen, is 1.30 a pound. Previously I was feeding petguard dry food and that comes to 1.91 a pound, so, in the end, it's a wash! And water's free, right :) This makes me feel a lot better (budget-wise) that it is very cost effective for us. yay! because the girls are doing great on it and love it.

I used thk for our trip across country and then when we got moved into our new house, switched back to raw.  Darby was not very happy that she had to chew rmbs again.

Anyway, the girls lucked out with our tiny frige, they get thk again :)

Yet another reason I love to brag on THK foods. Wink  I did the same calculations when I started feeding Preference and as long as I buy meat for less than $2/lb it's also a wash. Smile

Mine like it, lots, too, and I have been shocked at the little changes I've seen. I don't think it'll be the end of the food search, especially for Jewel (who has Emotional Tummy), but it's been a GREAT addition, for them.

I'm really psyched that they are coming out with a new fish-based food: Zeal.  Maybe that might work for Miss Jewel?

Who knows? LOL. Chicken and rice, with yogurt, seems to be her best bet. I'm about >thisclose< to just feeding her that, if it'll keep her tummy from hurting.

The *only* issue I had was when I ordered a sample (which I paid for, and I'm OK with that!) and it arrived, in the last few ingredients on the package, was that sneaky rosemary. It wasn't on the website, at all. When I emailed customer service to tell them that this made me slightly frustrated, the woman tried to school me in epileptic dogs and how 'only rosemary oil is an issue for sensitive dogs'. I never did get an apology and I think I ended up tossing my sample, because Pirate canNOT have rosemary, period, oil or no oil, regardless of what their rep says.

I really wish I could do it though. I've looked at Sojo's.

Sojo's smells like awesome. Our neighbor at the last dog show feeds it, and she brought over some for Bean's breakfast, one morning, LOL. She kind of liked Bean (and I wanted to steal her Poodle!).

I know, but it has stupid flaxseed. Which is OK sometimes, but not others. Special.

I like the idea of HK, but almost all of the formulations contain either grain or potato----- I cannot serve either one----I like the formulation with quinoa, but the base protein is chicken which I can't serve, either--oh well.  I have tried the Preference, but the dogs won't touch it----it's much too alfalfa-y, I think.  I do feed the Sojos Complete formula, and they do great on that-, and eat it enthusiastically--I do add extra meat/eggs to it though---So, we continue on a rotation of raw and Sojos Complete---all is well.

Sojos is good. i've fed it many times over the last several years. THK's Thrive doesn't have flax seed. Flax bothers Darby a lot and she gets a yeasty ear and feet/lips on Embark, which Lexi does fine on.

I've noticed they are just happier- I dunno if that's because we're all finally settling in and being used to Gobie being gone or what but I like to see them playing more.

I have been feeding Zoe THK's Keen so far and she absolutely loves it.  Jake does too, but it took him a little while to get used to the consistency.

Jake doesn't get it every day yet because the cost is a lot more than the cost of his current food and we're trying to figure out what works best for him.
