    Dog Food Suggestions

Hey guys! So tomorrow I'm going to the vets with my mom when she boarders Simba and I wanted to bring up wanting to change Simba's food. So what are some foods you'd suggest me switching Simba to? Some info on him: Boxer/APBT mix(as if you didn't know :P) about 46 pounds, 7 months old. He's currently on Science Diet by the way and I think that's whats giving him the most issues with his gas.

I may be a bit biased, but I always reccomend grain free, more meat=less fillers. unless the dog has specific medical issues and cannot handle higher protein (though I dont consider it very high). Some good brands include Blue Buffalo Wilderness, Taste of the Wild, Wellness Core, Acana Provincial, Orijen, Natures Variety Instinct.

Taste of the wild is the most affordable out of all those, but I also like BB wilderness, Right now I'm feeding wellness core, but the price has really gone up since last year (havent bought it in a while), so I wont be buying it again, if you can afford it, then go ahead. Make sure to get a small bag first and transition slowly over 2 weeks.

He's too young for grain free though - been various threads on that so keep him on a 'standard' Blue Buffalo not their grain free for now

Thanks for poiting that out, youre right the cal/phos levels are not appropriate for a puppy, the regular formulas should do fine until he's one and you want to try Wilderness.

Casey said to tell you his favorite is the fish, followed by the lamb :)

Zoey eats half chicken soup for the puppy lovers soul, and half taste of the wild ( bison & venison), i didn't like the consistency of her poo on chicken soup for the soul alone.

I havent fed kibble in years...but, my dad feeds his dog Blue Buffalo and Taste of the Wild (he rotates brands, and sometimes mixes the together) and Jack has done well on both of those alone, and mixed together.

Nikita is on Chicken Soup for the Puppy Lovers Soup (large breed)…she seems to do fine on it. The breeder uses Nutro which we had her on until I noticed the first ingredient on it…Chicken Soup's first 4 or 5 ingredients are meat (no by-products).

We are switching right now to Blue Buffalo. We are doing chicken and brown rice.

I want to caution people about grain free, it is not for every dog. We switched a bit ago to TOTW. We decided to have all the dogs on one food, and since formulas were changing.... My dogs did NOT tolerate grain free. All of them had much looser stools, and then Belle got all out runs from it. It was off and on for the past 3 weeks. We were not sure what was causing at first but since all of them are looser, we are saying the food. We switched since we are at the end of our TOTW bag. I am not saying it is not a good food, or grain free isn't a good thing, it was just my dogs systems could not tolerate it. This I think is the end of our 3rd bag, so it has progressively gotten worse. It could be too that TOTW is a very rich food so I am not completely sure it is the grain free.

However when your dog is old enough, if you  want to try grain free, they do have that variety. I like their processing and ingredients. Hope you like the food (hope we do too) I honestly bet the SD is the culprit of the gas. It has a lot of filler in it.

Blue Buffalo has also work well for my lab - niko. He does best on Fish and Sweet Potato.  His coat is the softest whenever he eats it.   I also like the chicken and brown rice.  My lab does not have gas problem at all on Blue Buffalo.  He also used to eat California Natural (fish version) but not since the sale of Natura.

My lab does not do well at all with grain free.  I have tried nature's variety instinct (chicken and duck/turkey versions), innova evo (chicken, red meat, and even the fish versions) and solid gold barking at the moon.  After doing so many trials .... I have found that:

    (1) my lab gets yeast infection in his ears (those nasty waxy brown stuff) whenever he eats too much potatoes.  Potatoes are the main starch in many grain free food.

    (2) my lab also cannot handle peas and tapioca either.  The alternatives to potatoes in some grain free food.  His ears would also get those nasty waxy brown stuff.

    (3) I am not sure why.... but, in addition to the above problems, grain free food gives my lab a lot of eye boogers - - - all kinds = crusty or watery gobs...

Anyway, I have given up on grain free food.   I just add stuff to his grain based kibble like raw egg yolk, canned sardines/salmon, cooked organ meats, fish oil, vit E, and probiotics.  He gets raw meaty bones for treats every few days.
