can anyone tell me about Pumpkin

I have a 10 month old black standard poodle Pup that has been not had a normal bowl movement since i got her. My breeder is tired of hearing from me and my vet is also tired of me. Sadie is on acana grassland and natural balance veg. I thought that the natural balance would bulk her up. Tonight she had pumpkin and rice along with her kibble. I hope this works.

Has a fecal been sent out to the lab?

Has she always been on this food? Sounds like it's not agreeing with her - or there's something more going on.

too much pumpkin will make her loose, so keep it minimal.

But exactly what Erica said -- find ANOTHER vet.  No vet should be "tired" of hearing someting when what they've offered isn't working.

    a couple of thots:

    1.  You don't mention where you are located -- but TCVM (traditional Chinese Veterinary medicine is excellent for stuff like that -- because it CAN be caused by imbalances in other parts of the body (in other words -- if the body isn't taking the moisture out of the fecal matter it's because there's something out of whack somewhere).

http://www.tcvm.com -- there's a locator on the left.  Please feel free to email me -- I've used TCVM on my dogs for years (my vet is actually one of the faculty).  I also go to an acupuncturist for myself.  It truly works incredibly well.

    2.  Elsewise -- get yourself to your state's best vet school -- it's usually a FAR less expensive route than "specialists" and they WILL get to the bottom of it (no pun intended).

I'd also, in addition to looking into the above, try a  probiotic. Nothing cleared up Aesop's constant poo issue until we did a month course of a probiotic

I keep some on hand typically.  I buy Kefir (plain) from the grocery store in the dairy section by the yogurt, etc.

First thing I would do is change the food.  I have one dog that cannot tolerate Wellness, for example, even though it's a great food and my other dogs do fine when they get it.  It's simply too rich for her system.  If that has no effect, get a second opinion from your vet.  Tampering with other things, if the food is the root cause, will not be helpful and may throw her nutritional balance off.

Also, have the dog tested for giardia - it can be hard to find, and is a frequent cause of diarrhea, especially in puppies. (Where did you get the dog?  Pet store puppies and byb puppies are notorious for harboring this.)  A trial on metronidazole or Panacur is sometimes recommended by vets just in case the giardia tests are inconclusive.

If it were my dog, I would treat with a double dosed round of Panacur to kill possibly giardia (it often is not detected by a fecal test even if the dog has it).  I also use metronidazole, it's a miracle drug for us, but I'm not sure if you can use both at the same time.  While on the Panacur (or metronidazole) I would use a totally bland elimination diet.  If you have to keep adding supplements and toppers to stop loose stools, then it's not really addressing the problem.  The dog should be able to eat a food without needing pumpkin or anything else to have normal poops.  So I'd use a bland diet that is one carb, one protein, and NOTHING else.  My diet of choice is overcooked instant white rice and boiled (with all the grease and fat rinsed out) ground beef.  I'd feed this for a week.  Then, slowly mix in kibble.  And I'd try a new kibble at this point, nothing too extreme.  All of my dogs have had rounds of loose stools but the all do great on "limited ingredient diets" like California Natural Lamb and Rice.

Perhaps he is getting too much food? I think that can be a problem too. Sometimes those recommendations on the bags are entirely too much for the dog though.  Also, did you mean that you were giving both of those foods, or those are two you have tried. If both at the same time, try only one. Then try different foods. Someone else mentioned they had a dog who had trouble with Wellness. I did too. I used their grain free food, and it totally did not work for my dog. I switched him to Blue's grain free, he has no problems. I've used all three flavors of it too. The other dogs in the house eat Wellness. If he even so much as steals more than a kibble or two from them, he gets sick, either diarrhea or he pukes it up.

Okay my vet was here today took a stool sample and put sadie on flagal again and told me to switch her food to a commercial brand with filler. She has been getting acana and natural balance veg. She has been on this mix for 8 months now. the only food she really did well on was science Diet lamb. That really worked well, but i just could not feed it to her.  I have to look in to some better foods for her. She did not do well on innova , cal nat . chicken is an issue for her also.

You might want to cook for that one if you have the time. Dr Pitcairns book has a few great recipes. Meat based is 6 cups of millet 2 lbs or 4 cups of raw ground turkey 1/4 cup vegetable oil bring 9 cups of water to a boil add millet simmer for 20 to 30 minutes until millet is soft and fluffy. Thoroughly mix all ingredients together and include a vitamin and mineral supplement daily. This is a good one it is vet approved http://www.platinumperformance.com/Canine/departments/2/ You can substitute 5 cups brown rice cook with 10 cups of water for 40 minutes or long cook Oats 10 cups of dry oats with 20 cups of water cook until. I personally use the veggie diet I have posted it works best for my dog that is meat intolerant. You need to freeze anything that will not be consumed in 3 days I do it in 2 cup flat containers that fit great in freezer very well.

You couldn't pay me enough to cook for a 10 month old puppy, without a consult from a nutritionist.

When vets and breeders let us down someone has to do something to help this dog. Dr Richard Pitcairn is a DVM PhD and has been helping to heal dogs since 1965 . In his book there are nutritional charts that allow you to see that they are nutritionally sound. My only interest is to get something in this dogs stomach that will stay there. How unhealthy do you think this dog is after 10 months of diarrhea Why would you think that feeding meat and grains vitamins and minerals might hurt this dog?
