    Honest Kitchen

Does anyone feed Honest Kitchen?  Which version do you use and do you supplement it?  How do you like it?

I have a 10 lb box sitting in my kitchen. Does that help? LOL. As soon as Jewel's bladder is sorted out, she's eating that with some extra stuff. Sabine Contreras is making sure it's balanced and safe for a bladder stone former.

It looks fantastic, and they love the flavor. We'll see about results, when she settles her skinny behind down.

Hey Jennie!  It's been a while!  I am actually considering it because of Sabine and people on her message board mentioning it.  Jake has had a UTI and crystals recently... no stones though.  I switched him to canned, but I don't want to do that long term.  I want to get a consult with Sabine eventually, but it is not happening yet.  I think I may just feed Zoe the HK alone since she doesn't have issues and Jake may get a diet by Sabine.

    Which formula do you have?

It was NOT expensive, at all. A diet based on a commercial product.... I think it was $49? Not at all what you'd expect. I've been putting it off, because she is yoyoing baaaack and fooorth. She had struvites, then calcium oxalates, now she's been on U/D for two weeks and her pH is dropping. When I can get her STABLE, then we can do her diet.

Are you using distilled water, too?

I chose the Keen. I like the oatmeal as her carb. It works, well, for her, and I like it MUCH better than potatoes.

Ooooh... I thought for the diet would be $65 because she'd be recommending homecooked with it.  Honestly, Jake is hubby's dog and he said he will consider having her make a diet once the crystals are all gone.  Then, she has a bit of a waiting list so I will need something in the interim regardless.  We sent his urine out for testing Monday and should know more next week.  Hubby makes the final decisions for Jake and I do for Zoe.  Since Zoe doesn't eat much, I will definitely buy Honest Kitchen for her... any variety.  I am just trying to figure out which one is best for her.  She does not have crystal issues, but I don't think she does well with grain free either.   The HK she recommends for Jake is of course the most expensive because of the higher protein level, and he eats a lot so it wouldn't last long.

ETA: I think you're right... it would be $49!  Yeah haha.

She usually has like a 4 week wait. She said Jewel would be getting extra meat, anyways, to ensure that her minerals don't get too high.

Hubby gets back from a business trip tonight so I am gonna talk to him about it again today and see what he wants to do.  I think he'll want to wait till we get the culture results back though.

     Good to see you Stacy!

Thanks!  I am gonna try to be around more.  Life has been/is pretty busy.

Honest Kitchen makes a number of blends, some of which are grain free and others are low-grain.  My favorites are Embark (grain free turkey) and Keen (low grain turkey).  IIRC, for a 4 lb box Keen is $28 and Embark is $44 (we have little dogs).  If you want to add your own protein, HK makes a blend called Preference, which is designed to be mixed with the protein.  The entire HK line is wonderful, especially for my allergy and IBD-prone pup.  I only feed HK for the evening meal, though, because I don't want her to become intolerant to dry food (which is more convenient to feed when we travel).  FWIW, my H is a (human) kidney specialist and has cautioned against feeding a high-protein diet because it may stress the kidneys (and kidney failure is the 2nd or 3rd leading cause of death for dogs), so that's another reason why I lean toward Keen.

We use Embark & Force when I'm lazy & forget to defrost our guy's meals.  I also use it for travel so that we don't have to try to lug around a ton of raw.  It's been great for us, & our guys love it.

On my vet's recommendation I feed kibble in the morning and homecooked at night.  The dogs started out on SoJo's since my vet sells it but have switched to HK's Preference (I add beef at twice the suggested amount, like my vet suggested for the SoJo's).  The dogs love it and are looking GREAT on it, plus I don't see stuff coming out the back end looking just like what went in the front, which is what caused me to switch from SoJos.

I pay $52 for the 10lb box and about $1.99/lb for beef to add in. If you become a fan on Facebook they will give you heads up on sample offers and similar specials. Smile

Thanks for the info!  I am off to FB friend them now.  I think I am going to get some this weekend if I can make it to the only pet store in the area that sells it.
