    Avoidance behavior

My dogs have reliable recalls except sometimes Proof and Kuniva as soon as I call they will lift their leg on whatever they are next to. Most the time they dont have any urine left and I know they are only doing this to prolong coming back to me. They happily come in after they mark and they normally do this in the beginning of a run because they are too excited to want to come back to me because there is places to explore lol!! This only shaves off seconds of coming to me but I want this to stop because if I ever need to call them in for a emergency seconds could make the difference!

What I have been doing is bringing the clicker so I can sharpen the recall but so far they are still doing it, I might go back to the long line and begin their off leash training from square one but would prefer not to. I also might get an E collar but will only do that as my last resort. Like I said this is our only issue and they dont take long but I would like to address this.

Has anyone had their dogs do this? If so how did you work them threw it? If anyone has any advice or methods that might help me feel free to post them!

     Thanks!!

    No ideas crew?

Jewel started that, and I started RUNNING (ok, I really don't run, but moving as fast as I move) away if she even looked like she was going to mark. It was motivation enough, for her.

I have an idea, but I would never use an e-collar - ever.

Get a whistle.  For a solid three weeks, do nothing but take that whistle out every day.  Don't use it to call your dogs.  Instead, with them right in front of you, blow the whistle and hand them something luscious (use terrific, stinky, wonderful foods that they don't get for anything else - like roast beef, tripe, turkey, cheese, liver brownies, Swedish meatballs, etc.).    For the next three weeks, wait until the dogs are distracted with their backs turned, then blow the whistle and reward when they get to you (don't make them come too far - from across a small room is fine).  Be happy, and cheerlead them to you if necessary.  Once they arrive, don't just feed one treat - feed ten (they need only be as small as half your pinky fingernail).  Next, at random, when you are in a different part of the house, blow the whistle and when they arrive, have a party - they each get fed for a solid twenty seconds (time this - it's a long time) and make a big deal of them.

Once they are 100% reliable indoors, slap that 30' line on and go outside - repeat the whole procedure.  If they stop to mark, just say "Oops" - reel them in and show them the treat (i.e. let them smell it), but don't give them anything.  Repeat - most dogs figure out very quickly that it pays to get to you pronto.

This way, you can be forgiving of the marking behavior on your regular walks, but the whistle is your emergency recall signal for when they really need to get to you f-a-s-t.  So, don't use the whistle for normal recalls - just in those cases when you really need the dog quickly.

Running away does work, but I need to apply a command that means "right now" so the emergency whistle is probably the way to go. Ive read about the emergency command somewhere too and I think thats what im going to attempt to accomplish. Ill tell ya how it goes!

    Thanks for the Ideas guys!!

What about an emergency down and you go "pick up" the dog?  Stopping to mark while being recalled might be tempting but the dog can't mark while holding a down-stay.

They do know "down" so thats something I can try on them and see how it works, depending on the situation that will be fine but if I spot a stray dog coming in I wont be able to use that but thats where the emergency whistle would be useful. Good ideas, If anyone has anything else go ahead! thank you!
