Burping Dog?

    Burping Dog?

My chowchow burbs quite often right after a meal, and will occasionally get the hiccups (not necessarily right after eating). It occurred to me that maybe her kibble gives her gas? Should I switch to something simpler than Eagle (now Holistic)? Like Chicken Soup or Cal Nat?

Also been thinking about this because she has been very itchy around her urethra. No infection in urine; vet has now shaved her thinking it might have been staying "wet" and irritated. I still suspect food.

Urine scald can make a dog very itchy, and I should think that if she had a food allergy, she'd be itchy in other places as well.  As to the burping, my Sioux is the queen of burp, and I rotate foods, but stick to the very high end ones, so I doubt that would solve the problem (which, to be honest, I don't regard as much of a problem here).  I just did a blood test on my male dog to check for allergies ($340) because he has itch everywhere, and he is on a good "hypoallergenic" food already.  Inhalant allergies tend to be more common than food allergies, but I'm going to get to the bottom of this one way or the other.  Skin patch test next if this doesn't show something that I can easily solve.

Brianna gives a very ladylike burp after eating. Doesn't matter what she eats, she will burp if she has had her portion. Her littermates do this too.

    I don't worry about it.

Ok cool. Won't worry about the burping any more....really didn't worry about it much to begin with but thought I would bring it up. Her itching does worry me though.

Better out than in...Shrek says that and in the case of dogs...esp larger or deep chested ones it's very true. Gas SHOULD exit the body because when it gets trapped in it...that is when real trouble can occur...in the form of bloat or torsion. ALL 3 of mine, large and small, burp after eating and even after drinking.

The shaving will help I would guess...she might have vaginitis which would be more something to detect from a vaginal swab, than a urine culture...did they do that, too?

That is the truth in all seriousness!  I have three large breed dogs; one is a mix but two are GSDs which are very prone to bloat.  I actually like hearing them belch once or twice after a meal because I know that the food is settling and gas is coming out.  When it gets trapped or if there stomach has flipped, that's when there are major major problems, so I do not mind that they belch after every meal.  We've yet to have an instance of bloat or torsion and I am happy with their health on the current kibble.  They are also good about drinking water with their meals so I don't need to soak their kibble or serve it in water.

I try to avoid foods that have things like Corn, Wheat or Soy. Eagle uses Corn which can make a dog gassy, it's also an allergen and can cause other issues like eye redness or dry itchy skin. My Collie Buddy used to be so gassy and I had him on Diamond dog food, but recent switched him over to this food. He doesn't burp or fart anymore! On top of that he has more energy, his coat looks great and his eyes aren't red anymore either Big Smile

Ox, your link went somewhere generic, with no specific food listed, so I killed it.  To avoid potential extraneous links that could be seen as SPAM, please reply with the name of the food you used, without linking to it.  Thx

Argh the link must of not worked or something. The food is Life's Abundance, a holistic pet food. *removed by moderator*

Or teenage girl!  I have a niece who can burp any teenage boy right under the table.  I'm so proud.  Indifferent

    Sorry, off topic....carry on.

Heidi sometimes burps, then looks at me like "Did I do that?"

maybe try a limited ingredient diet like *** van Pattens duck and potato sometimes that helps with digestion problems. My foxhound gets hiccups when he is nervous. Think about what she is doing next time she gets them. They also can get them from eating to fast, if you think it may be that raise the bowl up off the floor. Put it up on telephone books for a couple of days and see if that makes a difference.
