Vet says T-Bone is underweight !

So apparently T-Bone is a bit too thin. I feed him about 6 cups of Acana a day plus snacks. He's 8 months, intact male, active. Vet says great muscle tone, teeth, etc. but just not enough fat. He'd like to see he gain 5 to 7 lbs. How should I plump him up? Simply increasing his dry kibble intake doesn't seem to affect it much.

Sadly, I have the exact opposite problem with Jamison.

I had that problem with Neiko at that age. I ended up switching to Innova Evo and that did the trick. He still loses weight fast if I cut his food back but now that he is 3, I can get it back on fairly easily.

I would not add any more kibble to his regular meals.  Packing that much kibble into him at one time would make me worry about him bloating.

I would just start feeding him a third meal during the day.  I would probably only feed about a cup & a half at that feeding.

ETA:  I would not feed a large breed puppy a grain free food.  The risks of joint problems because of improper calcium/phosphorous levels isn't worth the weight gain to me.

    Wait!

    How much does he weight?

GSD's should run a little under, it is better than over.

Definitely.  When people tell me my dogs need more weight I consider them perfect.  Even seeing rib is OK at this age.  Nikon is nearly 18 months and just this past week I've not been able to see his ribs.

Sorry, had to take care of some drama in progress so I did not get to finish.

I always worried about Kords weight, and the vet listened but told me not to worry. The boy does not have much fat, if any. He is supper high energy, well toned, and could be easily pull up to 4 times his weight. His upper/front body strength is huge.

He will be 4 years old, 26in at the shoulder and runs on average between 73-78lbs.

I am going to guess T is running right around those weights? The standard for a male is 24-26 in at the shoulder and 66-88lbs for weight.

How much does he weigh now? Pups should be kept lean IMHO. We had a hard time with Ari from keeping her far too lean (I'm talking you could count her ribs without touching them, and her hips were jutting out at one point), but she was VERY active and we slowly added a bit more kibble (she didn't get as much as your dog does) and she got some human food as toppers (chicken, egg, cottage cheese, etc). Our vet said she could stand to gain a few pounds, but that he was happy with her energy level, muscle tone and the diet she was on, so it was no big deal as she was young and he preferred to see her skinny versus overweight. Once her growth spurts were done, her weight evened out and she still runs lean, but not anorexic skinny :) Her vet visit yesterday put her at 58 lbs, and ideally I'd like to see her at 60 lbs (she's 2 years old now). She's been getting out for longer off leash romps now that it stays lighter longer, so I'm not too surprised she's a bit lighter. We're simply just "rounding out" her scoops of kibble which will add a few additional calories per meal, without being too much too soon.

I'm with Deb on this one. I wish we had this problem. Toots weighs 26 lbs, but I'd prefer her at 24. 2 lbs., big deal right? It has nowhere to go, except her gut.

Vet says great muscle tone, teeth, etc. but just not enough fat

How much fat did the vet say a healthy large dog should have?

I know when I took Sammy in for his annual a few weeks ago, the vet commented on how he "didn't have an ounce of fat on him."   Both the vet and the tech admired his "athletic appearance."  (Their words in quotes) At no point did she indicate at all that he should gain weight.  Sammy is 2 1/2.  I'd much rather keep him in the condition he's in than have him gain any weight.  I can see a couple back ribs on him, but that's just his build.

I would much rather have my dogs on the leaner side than have any extra weight on them, especially since they're large dogs.

If the vet says your large breed puppy is underweight, but has great muscle tone, IMO, you're doing something right. It's totally acceptable for his age. Generally, if the vet thinks my dogs are in good weight, they need a diet.

T-Bone is 64.8 lbs at 8 months. He's still growing, quickly, in height and length. I agree he seems too thin. His mid-spine is very pronounced and his hips visible. (They're healthy, he's just skinny) When he stretches you can see all ribs thru his coat. If he isn't running you can't really see but maybe 2 or 3. Vet says he has a beautiful coat (and he does, super shiny!), great heart/lungs, teeth, muscle tone... says he's just too thin.

I agree, I don't want to give him even more kibble because of bloat. Plus plain dog food and buscuits dont affect his weight much it seems.

ETA: Strangers always comment how "he's beautiful... but he sure is skinny..." but obviously I can't go by stranger's opinions. His dad was 90 lbs and mother was in the high 70's. My breeder said he'd go thru a really lanky stage, and not to try to force his growth. She says this is a contributor to joint/skeletal issues later in life. I'll try to get some good hi res photos for you guys to see. I might just be worrying too much. He's active and not obsessed with food.

I agree with the breederBig Smile Is she nearby? I'd send her pics, and ask, if she's not close enough to take a look at him.

    • Gold Top Dog

omgosh, I recall the lanky look. If I went looking I could probably produce pics of Kord when I was worried about his weight.

Ideally an 8 month old puppy doesn't have a fat.  Sounds perfect to me - he will fill out later.
