Taste of the Wild High Prairie

Anyone use it??   Bought a bag of it today for Gibby. Not ever wishing to put him on no grain food....but I am still cooking for him but on a major "fatten him up" program.   I had started adding Blue to a couple of his meals..... went to buy some more at a new store I went to that I know sells Blue ( with a frequent buyer program besides ) but they did not have the BASIC that I was using, so I spent tons of time in there reading ingredients ( AGAIN ) and talking to one of the fellows that work there........and brough home a bag.  He is only going to get a cup of it per meal at least for a while, but its not one of the foods I have paid attention to before.

I started supplementing Taste of the Wild Pacific Stream for the boys several months ago.  They are doing very well with it.   I mix it with Chicken Soup for the dog lovers soul.  I also occasionally add home cooked to their meal also.  I am sure it is helping with their coat.  Not having any "gassy" problems and they both seem to be pretty regular.  I also noticed that Rocky is not scratching as much dont know if that has anything to do with it but since I havent changed anything else, I am guessing that might be helping.

Taste of the Wild Pacific Stream is what I use on WIllow who was also having stomach issues.  This food has worked wonders for her!!!  More than I could even explain.  It'supposed to be one of the better kibbles out there for dogs with digestion issues.  I haven't tried High Prairie and I don't even recall seeing this type before in the store.  Hope to hear some good things from it!

    Good food vibes for Gibby.

I haven't tried the High Prairie formula (Aesop is really picky and really only consistently likes fish based foods, so to prevent having a stubborn Chow halfway through the bag, we stay with those) but all of our dogs eat the Pacific stream formula and do very well. Good coats, no digestive issues, good weights.

Thanks Guys!  It will be a while before I know anything.....because first of all...Gibby will eat anything....there is nothing that he doesn't like...... so the guy at the store said "we have these samples of lots of food we sell..your welcome to take as many as you want."  and I just said not to bother...he'll like it.  BUT   of course the question is...will it like him??  Well I am home cooking for him and will continue for the most part. Especially now that he has crystals in his urine...... so until I get another test on that to see what its doing...he's not eating much kibble. However since he is pretty skinny I have been adding some kibble to his home cooked and will for a while. But the fella at the store told me that anything I buy there he will take back if it does'nt work......and he will even order what I want.  So I figured I don't have anything to loose...... and he din't have the Blue Basics that I was already using.  So we'll see.

Yup, probably best to feed whatever is best for the crystals!  Good Luck and sending some "GO AWAY CRYSTALS" vibes for Gibby.

I did make an attempt to do that last weekend...called a couple of companies Blue included.... Blue did call back by the end of the day stating that their food wasn't geared towards any theraputic levels so they don't have that information.   I had purchased the Blue thinking it would be good for his stomach if that was his issue.   Gibbys vet said she was NOT going to put him on prescription food yet....to wait to see what it does in the next few weeks so she suggested food for sensitive stomach.   Now.... I'm not sure this has anything to do with his stomach at all. I am giving him a little apple cidar vinegar in hopes to help with the crystals also...but meanwhile I will try to find out if they have information from Taste of the Wild.

I talked to a vet ( I believe she was ) when I called about Taste Of the Wild......she said as Blue Buffulo that they don't do anything in their forumlas to change a PH in a dog. So......if I were to take it back and get something else..wouldn't know what to get.   Found a couple of things on the Internet.... Solid Gold is about 6.4-6.6......  I think Orijen is only 5.5....THAT sounds low...makes me wonder if it even could be because that is not a normal number for a normal dog I DON'T THINK.  Again...until he gets that urine checked again I probably won't be giving him that much kibble yet anyway......

I'm not sure you'll find a food available in pet stores that will help with the crystals. You could probably have a homemade diet recipe made if you consulted someone who does that sort of thing. If the vet isn't worried about a prescription diet yet, I'd not be overly concerned.

Coincidentally, a coworker just got some routine bloodwork and urine panels back on two of her dogs. She'd just sent them out as a wellness check...neither were showing any symptoms of problems. It came back as both having one type of crystal and one of them having two types.  Apparently large numbers of them in the sample.  So both are on a prescription diet now

ETA that they were xrayed and one had very small stones, hence the rush on the prescription diet

Yes...that is what I am thinking at this point. If it were an easy thing to do such as go buy a food that is geared towards lowering  PH in his urine I would be there buying it...but its not that easy as it turns out...most food companies wouldn't be trying to put ingredients in to change a PH......and the vet could have put him on the prescription diet right then and there...she was looking at it while she said " I'm not going to put him on prescription food yet....just bring him back in a few weeks after you get him on dog food!"  THAT said because he is on home cooked food.   But by the time I can transition him over it will be a while.... AND....from all that I read, kibble is not the best thing for a high PH anyway.   I was told to give him apple cidar vinegar which I am.... ( also Vit C in ascorbic acid form )  and lastly.....I had been giving him a lot of Pepcid...and Tums for episodes of stomach issues.......and I just can't find the answer but I wonder it they would have helped raise that ph level..........and he is NOT getting anymore because they were not really helping anyway.       So hopefully it will be lower when we check his urine again...if not I"m sure she will put him on the prescription diet.

I hope he doesn't need the Rx diet; how is his stomach doing?

    • Gold Top Dog

Yes,,I hope not too Janice. Thanks for asking about him!   You know.....I never was sure what it is......and I still know any more now than I did...but I kind of really don't think its his stomach anymore.  I thought it was because he ends up wanting to eat grass a lot when he gets these swallowing things........like he is really sick to his stomach....and his face has the "please help me" desperate look.   Of coure he ate the darn toxic plant a few weeks ago and barfed....but other than that,,,,he mostly only does the swallowing thing, and still does it now and again. BUT he is eating and playing and doing everything normal...its been nice outside, so we have been walking him a lot and letting him run for exercise....and he is happy.  So how can he be sick to his stomach???   MYSTERY!  But besides reading similar symptoms from the Swissy website that they call "lickies" and then the Berner Mountain Dogs people also have a big page on it..they call it " the Gulps" ( which really is Gibby more because he doesn't lick things the way a lot of the Swissie people talk about.  Then last night I came across another whole page of people reporting about their dogs....and they are calling it "fits" and some lick and some don;t but they all swallow hard or gulp...and then desperately try to eat grass...... and when they can't get any...like Gibby ate the plant.....they will eat ANYTHING...carpet,.... toys...... the bed in their crates...... and its amazing that NO ONE has an answer.......a few have guesses...as I did with the acid reflux.......but NO  ANSWERS.    Many of these dogs have been tested for a ton of things.  The last few days when he starts doing it I rub his neck/throat a bit and he stops immediately.....so far anyway.     I have been trying to fatten him up because I think I really messed him up more with the homecooking with no fat in it.......   he is sooooo skinny.  I'm adding kibble to his food that has been cooked.... at lunch he is getting very rare ground meat and rice and I have been giving him another cup of kibble before he goes to bed.....thats my way of getting him to drink more water.

I haven't tried the High Prairie formula

Apparently I jinxed myself, lol.  Feed store was out of the 15 lb bags of pacific Stream and I was completely out of food. So, High Prairie it was. I've left it in the bag (rather than putting it in the bin as I normally do), just in case I have to return it if Aesop won't eat it, but meal number one went well with no balking

Cleo loved this food BUT the GAS...was horrible!! seriously!! I put her back on the fish one and no gas. She's on Chicken Soup right now since they had a good deal on it at the feed store...I kind of go with what is on sale AND acceptable LOL. So far I've been abel to get my big bags for under $40 which I consider a major victory given some of the ridiculous pricing out there for a mere 30# of food!

    • Gold Top Dog

Good luck!   Let us know after a while..

Gibby loves it...but then, Gibby likes ANYTHING... other than a few veggies ( off hand can't even remember which ONE ) he loves to eat...so anything he can get his teeth on is good for him.

I have added a cup to his home cooked..... ( and at lunch he gets 2 burgers almost raw with some rice and veggies ) and it looks like he is picking up some weight, which I an happy to see. Still looks skinny but feels like there is some meat between those ribs......
