Need Ideas for feeding dogs while moving/camping

Ok, it's a few months early but I am geting my moving/camping list together. The plan is, when DH comes home from deployment in May, we will pack out the house and then for our move- we will drive a day, and camp a day, drive a day, camp a day until we get to CA.  That way it's not a rushed long car drive which is tedious for both kids and grownups and pets.

So I have everything planned out for the guinea pigs, and now workng on my dog list- my major 'dilemma' is food.  Currently I'm cooking for them and they are doing great.  They also do well on Fresh Pet (refrigerated meat based moist food) and PetGuard Lifespan dry and/or canned.

I am sure we will have a cooler along for people and pig food as well, so I would have some room to keep food cool. I will have a lot going on as far as caring for 2 kids- 5 and 3, so they need a lot of mommy help ,4 guinea pigs- who will get some play pen time out of their carriers, and then the 3 dogs. Gobie is by far the neediest, always wanting to see everything, he's a barker and the older he gets the harder it is for him to travel. He will pace back and forth in the back of the suv panting and whining. Crate him in the car and he barks.  Potty walks he's anxious and wants to just go go go.  Dear old Gobie. He's 14 lbs but like having multiple dogs in one LOL The girls are fine travelling, very quiet, easy going.  I want to make sure they keep hydrated, as they tend not to drink much on trips.

So I could do Fresh pet which is already moist, or all canned, or dry lifespan with water added.  Or Dry/canned with a bit of water added.

I am kindof leaning toward doing dry/canned so that we can get settled in before I go back to cookng for them. I don't want to run out of food on the way either, because I won't have internet access to locate a source for freshpet.  Canned would be ok because I could get a few cases and the unopened don't ahve to be refrigerated.

    What do you think?

Slip Gobie some Rescue Remedy, LOL!

I would probably do canned with dry, if I were in your situation. You could split a can 3 ways and that way there isn't any leftover. You can measure out dry ahead of time into those snack-sized ziploc baggies and just grab one per dog when you feed them, instead of having to lug out a big bag.

If you have a laptop, you'd be surprised at the number of state welcome centers/rest stops that have wi-fi!

    What about honest kitchen?

I am leaning toward dry/canned myself as well. I have those lids for the canned food I can use, and would have space for a bag of dry.

I love the idea of HK, every time I try to transition my guys on it, they get raging diarrhea. I've tried 3 times over the last few years and even with a slow transition, it sends them into diarrhea, especially Gobie who ends up with it overnight in his crate. Bleh.

Thanks for the good ideas.  I shouldn't be frettin this early, but I am SUCH a planner!

ETA: I never thought about wi-fi for my laptop (I am not very computer smart LOL).  That's a great idea!

Umm why not just dry?  When I travel my guys all eat plain kibble even though at home they get toppers in the morning (yogurt) and homecooked at night.  From where I sit it looks like you might be overthinking this a bit - why make it harder than it has to be?

She said the girls aren't big drinkers and she doesn't want them to get dehydrated :) if it were a day or two I'd be OK with it, but it seems like a pretty long haul and I would worry about the same thing.

Feed them wet kibble.  Start a week or two before the move so they are used to it and you can see if they drink enough.

I would go to a pharmacy and pick up a bottle of active lactobacillus (I typically use Lactonex (sp?).  I would give one per day with a meal.  This will support the gut for changes in food and water, as well as the stress of traveling.

I will look for the lactonex to try prior to and during the move.

I could do just dry and add water to it. They will eat it that way as well.

They are not big drinkers during travel (the girls anyway) and Lexi once ended up with a UTI from a trip from not drinking enough.  We always have these huge long distance moves, aaah!   That is why I was thinking canned or adding some canned to it.

Then add to it the odd food guilt I have (am I feeding the "right" think, isn't homemade food better blah blah) and I fret over something that should be relatively simple! LOL

It completely depends on how much room you have -- but I'd do either canned that you can split evenly and dry 0r something like that.

Try cans of sardines as "topper" - they are awesome for them and will encourage them to drink. They also can encourage them to eat if they get fussy on the road.

Carry bottled water -- AND carry a baby medicine syringe.  Rather than encourage them to drink and fret over it, just suck up a syringe, park it behind the canine tooth and squirt it in and do that every hour or so.  But CARRY water -- stop and buy it (preferably the same brand) -- it avoids a lot of gut problems along the way.

Make **sure** (not sure how long it's been since you have done this with **this** crew) that everyone is super ok to pee/poop on leash -- that's the biggest hassle when traveling because they gotta get out and **go** without a 25 minute walk.

Hylands Calms -- more reliable than Rescue Remedy.  Bring enough for the humans too!! (young AND old)

    THanks Callie.

I was thinking about bring the Calms along for Gobie since they worked so well for him on the chocolate incident.

I think I am going to do canned plus dry- scoop of dry, spoonful canned plus water. I can put the open can in the cooler and it won't take up much space in there with the people and guinea pig vegs.

Great ideas guys, this helps a bunch!
