Kibble

    Kibble

An interesting thing came up on one of my Great Dane boards.  One of the posters Dane bloated and now she is asking questions and people are giving their ideas.    One thing that was brought up was about soaking kibble.    I guess that is a conversation all in itself....as should I or shouldn't I soak...which is not what I want to bring up here.

It was mentioned...you can test your kibble to see if its something you should be feeding or not.  If you soak it in water and it swells up...its not good food and should not be fed was her statement.    I am not feeding Gibby kibble right now,,,,  I am trying to go a different route for him but do have two kinds of kibble left here that I give him as treats....   I have Eagle Pack and California Natural.   I put one piece of each in a cup and added water and went to dinner. Came home and the EP was swelled up but almost the same size...the California Natural kibble was at least 3 times in size.

Wondered if anyone heard of this experiment and what they thought!

I've never heard of this.  I soak kibble for my dogs.  They won't eat it unless I do.  You got me curious now.  Off to do the test.

I've heard that before.  The kibble I feed (when I do, right now am cooking for them) is my fav, PetGuard Lifespan. It swells, but just a little bit.
I also put a splash of warm water on kibble when I feed it- but I also use toppers.

It is hard to say what causes bloat but it is sure scary!

For sure! Thats a whole conversation all in itself.

But you know...it sure is interesting about why some kibble swells more than others. I did my experiment with California Natural and Eagle Pack....  what makes one swell so much more than the other...I know they are both really good kibbles.   AND as the person said on the Gread Dane forum.......does it really mean anything if you do feed one that swells a lot???

I'd have to wonder at the validity of soaking the kibbles in *water*. After all, when the kibble is actually consumed, it doesn't go into a big bowl of water, it goes into a dog's mouth and digestive system, which are full of enzymes that work to begin breaking the kibble down. Just my two cents :)

Makes sense..... but I wonder if that experiment comes from the conversation of drinking water after eating kibble or not.   As for instance I have always added a bit of water right before serving kibble ( RIGHT before so there was no soaking ) so the Danes don't guzzle a ton of water after they eat. I think they should have water available...but not necessarily good for them to drink a ton of it after eating as they sometimes do.  Of course in Gibbys case...he doesn't drink much water so it assures me that he has had some.
