going to try emu, what parts to try?

Someone local has emu and says that their poultry allergic dog does great on it and offered to give me some to try with Bugsy.

Just wondering if trying an organ or bone or pure meat would be best to see how he tolerates it

He is extremely allergic to chicken, turkey and egg.  We have not tried duck

I would try pure meat, & just supplement the calcium.  I don't feed emu or ostrich bones because they are really dense, & I'm afraid that someone would break a tooth in the process of chewing them, & there's no way that our grinder would be able to handle them.  I do boil them down & use the stock to bait their water when needed.  Emu isn't very fatty, so the broth is much nicer to deal with than chicken or turkey broth.

FWIW, Angel gets terribly itchy when she eats chicken, turkey, or quail, but she does great on duck, emu, & ostrich.

wow so the bones aren't edible? ZOWIE!

I'll ask her for just meat to try then - thanks!

and thanks for the info on Angel.  I am a bit nervous as he gets hives almost instantly from chicken turkey and egg - I have lots of benadryl on hand LOL

Karen, I have a mental image of Bugsy chasing down an emu, with ease. lol  Good luck, I hope it's something he can eat.

you are too funny - of course the first stage would be to go into full point - "BIRD", size wouldn't factor in Big Smile

You know it has been so difficult to find a good kibble and once he did so well on Orjen fish I thought the search was over.  Now they can't produce enough of it to package it in large bags.  I don't know what else to do.  I would feel more comfortable doing some raw meals and an excellent kibble but if all raw is our best option then that's what it will be

I'm told that you can feed them, but that you should do it with caution because of the bones being so dense.  I'm fairly certain that both Bevo & Shooter are both so determined that they could break a tooth, & continue to try to crack the bone. Indifferent  Knowing that led to my decision of them not getting the bones.

Fingers crossed that it goes well!

yea I can see B being a little too determined - very glad you pointed this out to me.  Not sure what sort of dog the person has, may be not a heavy chewer as she said she feeds the bones.

anyway of most importance is whether he is allergic or not

we finally hooked up and she gave me heart, trachea and a foot.  Tonight he had trachea and heart and no hives

pretty happy - he was very happy!

I'll have to wait until my mom leaves to let him have fun with that foot

OMG you have no idea how weird this thing is LOL It still has feathers on it and the scaly skin.  They seem to have chopped a bit off the toe, aw heck I have no idea what an emu foot looks like before being removed but this thing is creepy Big Smile

The girl that gave it to me said the lady throws them in for free - they are so hard most dogs won't do anything with them.  We'll see.  I can imagine him grabbing it and having a run around with it
