Kong stuffing?

I don't see where it would be bad for any of that. And, yes, a smidge of peanut butter should cover the hole fine. I'd do an egg, some yogurt, and sweet potato (maybe a little cinnamon, mine LOVE that) in the blender. If he needs meat, put it in the BOTTOM of the KongBig Smile Set the Kong in a coffee cup. It works great! LOL I am a Kong freezin FOOL. If they aren't eating from my hand, they're eating from a Kong. I cannot deal with dogs who eat from bowls. They are way too obnoxious, LOL. Three ridiculously active dogs gets to be a bit much, sometimes!

I know what you mean about dogs that eat from bowls being obnoxious lol. My dads dog, Jack (the black and white spaniel mix thats always in the pics with Bailey) is fed from a bowl. Whenever his food bowl is put down he usually just sniffs it and walks away, and then comes back for a bite every few minutes, my dad is always saying that hes spoiled or that "whoever had him before fed him *human* food, thats why he doesnt eat his food right away" Confused I dont think that its because hes "spoiled" at all, just that food in a bowl is very un interesting for a dog like Jack. In the summer if i take them both for a long walk, after that he will eat the whole bowl right away but now that its winter and he gets a lot less exercise he isnt to interested in food when its in the bowl. BUT, if for whatever reason I have to feed him (like my dads not home or somthing) I make him work for the kibble (like, doing behaviors for it) or put it in his kong, and he acts like hes never seen food before. When he has to WORK to get it, he really wants it, but when its put right in FRONT of him, he doesnt want it, lol.  I dont have that problem with Bailey though, any time, anywhere, if you give him food, he'll eat it.

So, Bailey had his first potato/yogurt/veggie/meat filled kong this week, and he looooooved it. I really need to get the next bigger size kong for him though, whatever size this one is just isnt quite big enough for him. Hes 70 pounds, im thinking an XL is the right size for him? Im pretty sure the one I have is a large, but it just seems to small...

So if hes getting a kong every day, with potato and yogurt mainly, sometimes with veggies, fruit, or meat in it... how much should I cut down his dinner? He normally eats around 1 pound of meat each day (thats on the low side, because hes not very active right now, in the summer its usually 1.5 pounds or more) Im not sure how much the kong stuffiing would equal to for a regular meal...

Just wanted to say that there really isn't anything they can't get out of the everlasting fun ball - trust me I have tried to find it if there is Wink - I suppose I may be leaning towards cruel with B as I like to hear him get a bit frustrated trying to get stuff out.  The other day I had a small piece of dried beef lung in there and it took him a while get it out.  He even got mad enough to sling the ball at me, but when I took it away he wanted it back in a hurry LOL

Dried beef lung is also good in kongs, cut into triangles that are large than the opening, B has a method of getting them out fairly quickly but having given that to two other dogs (labs) they couldn't get it out.

    gotta run ............

What do you put in it? I cant seem to find the right kind of treat. My problem is, Bailey doesnt really "try" hard to get it out like he used to. Thanks to my mom, who never listens to anything I say decided to "help" Bailey get the treats out. It was when she was on vacation, and when I gave him the ball when I left, I stuffed it with easy treats, and hard treats, so that some would come out quick and others would take work to get out. Well, I found out a while later that the whole time she was on vacation every day she would "help" Bailey when he seemed to be struggling to get them out. I specifically told her NOT to, and she did. Ever since then he gives up quickly, and will just stare at me or bring the ball over like hes saying "come on, I KNOW you can get them out for me, I GIVE UP" Even when I put REALLY good treats in there, like cooked chicken or beef in little chunks, once they stop just rolling out, he stops trying. And I CANNOT figure out how to get him to work it again. I have never taken them out for him, but he still gives up so easily and just stares at me, waiting for me to get them out. It really sucks becuase it was a great toy, that kept him busy for a while, and thanks to my ignorant mother its now useless Angry

I havent been able to find beef lung ANYWHERE around here. No store has it, and its just way to expencive to buy his meats online.
But I have put big chunks of cooked meat in there that are bigger than the hole and it does last a bit longer. Bailey is pretty good at cleaning out a kong. He stands it up between his paws and uses his feet to hold it, and just licks all the stuff out, but putting the meat in there does slow him down a bit...

these are the beef lung treats I use link

Bugsy loves those and they are really hard and mostly fairly thick.  I out pieces of them in kongs as i described and Bugsy crunches the whole kong so that the lung cracks into smaller pieces and come out.  He does this so fast it isn't much fun.  But if I put small pieces like the size of liver treats into the everlasting fun ball it takes him a long time to get it out LOL.  It doesn't crumble it sort of crushes so it doesn't fall out of the holes.  Those liver treats are great in the ball too

as for undoing your mom's work - don't' be angry with her she thought she was helpful - with Bugsy I just take it off him and put it in view if he brings it to me.  Inevitably he will throw behaviors at me to earn it back.  He will not bring it back to me again until empty.

I haven't filled kongs for him in ages because he would just destroy the kong if it had good stuff in there he wanted.  He might not do that any more but he is happy with his current regime.  Honestly he seems to enjoy the challenge of destuffing more than the food - he is not terribly food motivated.

Good luck I am sure you will find the right mix!

We are/were using these in Bevo's Everlasting Fun Ball.  I have been using them for over a year & they are very difficult for him to get out.  Earlier this week, he learned that he could shove his entire bottom jaw into the ball & fish the treat out that way. Indifferent

Bev doesn't get kongs anymore because he has figured out how to snap them in half so that he can get to the good stuff quickly, so for now, he has no interactive toys that are difficult for him to play with.  I'm looking at a few Nina Ottosson puzzles for him.

he must have a small bottom jaw LOL

you might try small pieces of the lung - not impossible but not simple either

Bevo can SNAP a kong in half?? Indifferent

Ive been considering getting him a Nina Ottosson puzzle, but I wasnt sure if he'd be able to figure it out. He uses his paws mainly, not his mouth, so I dont think he would figure out he had to push the things with his nose, he would just slap his paws around, wacking the puzzle until something happend Confused

LOL, Spazzy, mine aren't picky. They're INSANE! They have to *do* something, or there's no  living with them. Eating from a bowl just doesn't expend any energyBig Smile Jewel, especially. I was hoping she'd calm down, but she has not.

Amanda, Emma figured out her new puzzle toy in under 10 minutes. I got the double sided one from J&J. I said, "Find it", once, and she did the first side in under a minute. Picked it up, made the second side "hard", and she had that one done in about 5. Sliding the doors took a little  thinking. If I give it to her again, it'll take no time. I'm using it for the less thinking dogsWink

Listen, sometimes it is OK to be more beauty than brains. It's worked for me!

Yeah, he can snap an XL black one in half lengthwise.  The first few times I thought that it was a fluke, but after watching him, I realized that it wasn't.  He splits it right down the seam.

I'm afraid that the Ottosson puzzle might be thrown around.  Bev likes to throw his toys, so my biggest concern is whether or not they will be, at least somewhat durable.

My fear with the Ottosson puzzles is that like Emma B will figure it out in a few minutes and then it is essentially useless. He'd probably just start chewing bits off the wood ones.........

Amanda as I was looking through B's drawer of toys that can hold food I was thinking what about going to a smaller fun ball, that way he can't get his jaw in.  I find that small things can be tougher than the big ones for beastie.

Interesting about the kong, B mode of destruction is to take the top section off

toss some RMBs, a bit of yogurt, some liver, gizzards, cottage cheese, whatever, into the food proccessor and pipe it in using a ziplock baggie with the corner cut off.

Brilliant!  Such a good idea...must try that.

Have you guys tried the twist and treats.  My guy love these; and its funny to watch Bruder hold on and literally twist the dang thing open to get to the treat inside.  I close them all the way, so they really have to work at getting inside.  They are quite durable too:
