Kong stuffing?

    Kong stuffing?

Ive been trying to give Bailey some sort of food dispensing toy everyday when Im at school. Otherwise he gets very bored and unhappy. If I give him his Kong or everlasting fun ball, he couldnt care less that Im leaving lol. So, the 2 toys that I use are the Kong, and the Everlasing fun ball. He likes them both but I use the kong most, because with the everlasting fun ball its harder and takes longer to find and stuff treats in there that are hard to get out, but WILL eventually come out. All the treats ive used so far are either to easy and come out quickly, or are to hard and its impossible for him to get them out. So what ive been doing almost every day it, the night before I stuff his kong full of peanut butter, and put it in the freezer, and give it to him in the morning right before I leave. Is it ok for him to be eating so much peanut butter? Is there anything else that I can use to stuff his kong with? I did make a chicken smoothe once and froze it in the kong, but it was really messy and it takes a while to make, which once in a while is OK but I cant do it every day. I cant put anything really liquidy in there because it could just come out before it could freeze, and putting regular treats in there is just way to easy for him.
I wont use those Kong stuffers they make (the kind that looks like cheese in a can) because I dont even want to guess at what the ingredients are, and it would most likely give him alergies anywas (most stuff like that does)
Anyone know any HEALTHY kong stuffers that are easy to make and freeze?

You can literally put ANYTHING in a Kong. I would not give him that much peanut butter every day, because it's extremely fattening. That's a lot of plant fat and plant protein, and it's hard for them to process.

Leftover dinner. Yogurt and veggies. Kibble samples (I know you feed primarily raw, but they like this!) with yogurt or a spoonful of peanut butter. Baby food.

Yeah, even for a big one like Bailey, that's a LOT of peanut butter. I use kibbles rolled in whatever - yogurt, baby foods, cream cheese, canned pumpkin, pretty much anything smushable. The kibble takes up space but the sticky stuff holds it all in.

This is when a premade raw comes in handy---Nature's Variety, Primal, Stella and Chewy's all make a nice medallion sized nuggets that fit nicely in a Kong---frozen or semi-thawed.  Any kibble with a homemade mixer would work--maybe add in a bit of yogurt or cream cheese to firm it up.  Also some of the dehydrated raw proucts (Honest Kitchen, Sojo's, Grandma Lucy's ) work nicely when stuffed in a Kong.  If you have access to any of the Ziwi Peak products (dehydrated raw jerky bits) mixed with yogurt or cream chees is a big hit also.

Sorry, I forgot to say I dont fill the WHOLE thing with peanut butter. I dont put a ton in, just on the sides usually. But yea I know, thats still too much peanut butter to be eating every day. If there is any leftover food around i'll put some chunks of whatever in there, but it doesnt make it last any longer, he gets chunks out really fast.

Yogurt might work, is there any specific kind/brand you guys use?

The kibble is a good idea but Bailey hasnt had kibble in years, and im not sure how it would affect him, or what kind wouldnt upset his allergies... Plus getting kibble would be kind of a lot of money just to stuff a kong (around here buying raw is much much cheaper than buying kibble, the store I get his food from has bulk sales all the time which helps me a lot...)

I'd like to use some of his meals to stuff the kong... but im not really sure how Id do that with raw?

If he can have some starches, mashed potatoes mix well with organ meatsBig Smile So does oatmeal, or rice. That is a tasty treat that mine have always enjoyed. Do you ever feed hearts or gizzards? Those would work great, too. Sweet potatoes are a big hit, here, EVERY time.

For yogurt, I get Dannon Natural plain, unsweetened. It's JUST yogurt.

Spazzy, not sure if you missed my above post---but feeding raw is easy in a Kong---just feed the pre-made in the Kong-----it's easy convenient, and not messy.  I feed a raw diet and homecooked diet, but find the pre-made's and dehydrated to be so convenient for Kong stuffins'. I do not feed kibble, but manyof the dogs I sit for do, so I mix their kibble with homecooked or one of the dehydrated mixes with yogurt and fill the Kong.

I find any yogurt is fine---I feed the full fat yogurt, but I know that many like to feed the low fat variety.  Cream cheese and cottage cheese are good options, as well.

I can't find it anywhere now.  But, I could of sworn they had a little stand to stand the Kong up while it was in the freezer.  Anyway, I usually just use a plastic cup to keep it upright.  I think my brother or one of my friends just uses peanut butter on the ends to sort of seal it that way.

On the Kong website they have different recipes too.

I usually just put low fat vanilla yogurt in Willow's.  She's got a senior one.  But, she really doesn't like it that much.

Starches dont seem to bother him, hes had potatoes a few times recently actually and it hasnt bothered him at all. Potatoes and organ meat??? Oh, yum.... Ick! But, cooking the potatoes to stuff his kong all the time would be a pain lol. I wish I had the money to buy a bunch of kongs, so I could have several filled in the freezer so I didnt have to re stuff it all the time Tongue Tied

I get him hearts whenever I find them. They NEVER have them at the store I get most of his food from, I have to go to another place to get them, and even then a lot of the time the other store doesnt have them either. He does like gizzards, I get those alll the time, they sell them really cheap in big packs here. My ferrets love them too so I buy them pretty often. I didnt think of gizzards, those might be easy to stuff the kong with.

I'll probably have to start cutting his normal dinner down a bit, he has gained a little weight recently.(I kind of like him put on some weight in the winter though)

tzu_mom- sorry I didnt see your post before. Pre made raw really isnt an option for us. The only pet store around here doesnt carry any, the closest one that does is a 40 minute drive from me, and since I dont have a car, that really isnt an option.

If you could figure a way to invest in 2 or 3 more kongs, you could toss some RMBs, a bit of yogurt, some liver, gizzards, cottage cheese, whatever, into the food proccessor and pipe it in using a ziplock baggie with the corner cut off.  It would be kind of a pain to do it for just one Kong though.  I use this method for Kongs and marrow bones.  If its too watery, I just add either some cornmeal or oats, or I'll stuff a bit of bread in the small end as a stopper.  A handful of instant rice works too.

We use all kinds of stuff.

I boiled a chicken today for kong stuffing for the week.  I removed the skin, & peeled the chicken off the bone.  Then I mixed it with the broth, & some plain, unsweetened yogurt.  I use peanut butter & 3-4 pieces of kibble to seal the small end.  Then I stuffed them & tossed them in the freezer.

I also cut chicken hearts in half, mix them in a fruit & veggie puree, & freeze as well.

For Thanksgiving & Christmas, I took leftover turkey, mashed potatos, green beens, & whatever else was dog safe, & rough chopped it in the food processor for the kongs.

Bummer----the convenience factor of pre-made is really great for this.  If not, then do what Amanda suggests---leftovers, if you have them, make great kong stuffing.

....and yes, you will need to adjust his regular feeding amounts, as the Kong stuffing does go toward total daily caloric intake.

    Have fun experimenting

You can microwave sweet or white potatoes, pretty fast. Depending on the size of your Kong, one will stuff two or three of them, usually. I use big Kongs....

Raw eggs are another good option. You have a blender? Make a "smoothie" of yogurt, whole eggs, and berries. YUM.  Any boneless meat peices you feed can be shoved in there, too, or even small bits like chicken necks.

I usually just use leftover human food that is safe for dogs. Pizza and chicken breast have been huge successes, as after they are smashed in there and frozen, seem difficult for the dogs to get out.

Also, I will just used kibble mixed with canned food and freeze that if I do not have acceptable leftovers.

Wow... DUH. I completly forgot about the microwave Embarrassed lol
Baileys kong is a large I think? Maybe a medium?

I dont have a food processor, but I have a blender. Its really old but it still works, sort of.
So this smoothe,  how do I freeze it in there without it coming out? Will a little bit of peanut butter in the tiny hole block it?
And its ok for him to have these things on a daily basis? I'll switch it up as much as possible, depending on what I have available.

Can i freeze his supplements in there? I give him salmon oil and bee pollen,  would freezing be bad for those?
