Okay, so let me just say, my dogs LOVE crock pot chicken!!! I only did 4 large thighs this time to see how much it would yield, plus I don't have much room in my freezer right now. I did use some bay leaf and poultry seasoning (it only has herbs, no onion or salt) and some garlic powder. I added carrots and green beans about half way thru and cooked it for 24 hours. My house smelled wonderful the entire time!!
I have a package of chicken hearts in the freezer and can get them readily at Publix, but I wondered if you just toss them in whole at the beginning?? It seems like they would get tough during the cooking process? Next time I want to add spinach and maybe a little potato. The girls also love cauliflower, so I'd like to try that as well and maybe some peas. There was so much broth, I refrigerated it and skimmed the fat off the top the next day and froze the rest in ice cube trays so I can take them out as needed. With the thighs, all the bones broke down, so that was good. Next time I will maybe do a whole chicken, depending on the price. I'm sure it's cheaper to do it that way.
Has anyone ever added rice? At what point would you do this???
My only regret.... I threw the chicken skin away. I should have crisped it up in the broiler and ate it - it's my favorite part of the chicken, even though it's a heart attack on a plate!!! :)
