    food for Kaiser's perianal fistula?

I've been doing some research and can't really seem to find any good info. Does anyone have any good ideas on what i should be feeding Kaiser with his perianal fistulas?

You could try a fish and potato, or duck and potato type diet that would be appropriate for colitis or IBD dogs.  But, most of the time, diets don't have as much effect as you would want for perianal fistula.  Have you talked to your vet about cyclosporin therapy, or is your dog a candidate for surgery?

Megan do you post on the GSD board?  I've seen lots of posts about this condition b/c it is more common in GSDs.  I bet people there would have some suggestions.

We are waiting until he's done with the flagyl and keflex before we start cyclosporine. The swelling has went down and i looked today, the fistula is gigantic.

Lies, i actually did post and they recommended doing a search. I couldn't figure out the search engine and thought it had only went back 3 months. Hopefully tomorrow i can get on there and fool with it some more.

I would probably start looking towards Hill's Z/D or Purina's HA.  They are each company's version of a hypoallergenic food.  They may not be the quality of diets that you are accustomed to, but if they work for Kaiser, then it may be worth it.

That's an interesting suggestion. I know Kaiser has anal gland issues; Jessie, who is mostly GSD, used to need them expressed every four to six weeks. I changed her to a RX diet last summer ( a fish and rice diet by Royal Canin) because of her food and environmental allergies, and she doesn't need them expressed anymore. I don't know if it's because she isn't allergic to the food or because it has anti inflammatory ingredients; high in omega 3's, has curcumin, aloe vera, extra zinc and b vitamins for the skin. A simple diet high in omega 3's may help Kaiser. I'm sorry to hear that the fistula is so big; poor Kaiser.Sad

From what i've read, it looks like a high protein, grain free food is best. We bought Acana pacifica...gonna try it and see how it works.
