Yay finally got some beef hearts!

I have what looks like three beef hearts thawing out. My question is how much do I feed? I want to use it like a topper because I have no clue when I will be getting more and I don't know how much this three hearts where (my mom's friend works at a slaughter thingy and she sells her the meats but my mom pays her later). I had no idea the hearts where this big, I think they are cut thru the middle but they are really wide. Do I just cut it up and give them some pieces or do I have to measure how many? In total I have 8lbs and 10oz. First time feeding them something raw (well beef).

Beef hearts are large; I used to cook them for the family but haven't been able to find them in our area for years. Since your dogs aren't used to raw, you should start with small amounts, just small scraps. If they tolerate that well, you can work up to a few ounces. Beef heart is high in iron so you don't want to overdo it.

I read about the iron part. I will try to feed this once a week and then add more if I can get it more frequently and if they can tolerate it. Thanks!

I know him and Pudding will appreciate it.

No the Aussie is not mine he is my mentors dogs, I will hopefully get to show him on of this days but I still have more training to do still learning the ropes of conformation.

BTW how much do I feed today?

What you prob want to do is cube it in maybe one inch squares, then freeze about a cup (probably 6 oz weight) at a time in baggies - freeze about five or six of those, then freeze the rest in quart bags, about half full.

Divide what's in the baggies through the week - that way it will help you remember what you have fed and if you get upset tummies, you can back off for a bit and only that little bit will be thawed.  So maybe just a cube per meal at first, then you can increase it gradually.

Heart meat is pretty much just muscle meat.

    Have fun!

Should have read ^that before feeding, I gave them each 4 cubes. Hopefully they will be able to handle it. I have seperated it into 3 baggies each different weighs and put those in the freezer. I left out 1 1/2lbs to feed throughout the week. I did cut it into 1" cubes I hope.

By father was Indifferent when my mom told him it was for the dogs he thought it was for him to eat! lol Now he is saying he will ask my mom's friend to get him some hearts, livers, and the intestine.....

It will probably be fine - worst case scenario, poop-splosions.  I'm just very conservative when giving advice.  Smile

One time I put chicken quarters and some other veggies from the fridge, that had slightly turned (limp celery and carrots, brownish apples, etc).  I went to a dog thingie and came back to find that hubby had dished it up and they were cleaning up the last of it.  He always asks now.  By the way, it was a big hit. Confused

    Lol that is funny.

Well I checked there poops today and they are no poop-splosions their stools were nice and firm, normal I would say. How much do I need to feed? Do I a feed it everyday or weekly?

Back off just a little (maybe two cubes instead of three, and you can feed it every day if you like.  This is optional, up to you and your dogs, so once they are used to it, go ahead and experiment with more or less, other meats, fruits and veggies, whatever.

Will do, thanks for the input brookcove!
