    Before Grain (aDork)

Does anyone here feed this? I bought a sample bag and apparently it's like rocket fuel for Misha. It gives him so much more energy than usual. Has anyone else had this effect with this food?

I feed the cat the dry and canned BG currently. She does well on it anda great shiny coat on it.

I fed Avery BG Chicken for a few months. She did well on it- maintained a good weight and had a nice glossy coat. The only reason I switched off is because it was pricey. I could find a cheaper grain free food at the same quality. I didn't find that she had any burst of energy on it, she's always been quite calm for a Cattle dog, though.

I use BG for my two dogs.   They are both adults and do very very well on it.  One of the few foods they do great on.  I generally rotate foods about every two months but have stayed on this for the past 4 or 5 because they do well with it.  I use the dry kibble and usually add Evangers canned for a mix in or homecooked.   I have used BG canned food as well for a mix in and I also like that.

Really ? You don't mind paying $2+ a can for  a can of food that's 50% water and the rest cooked to death ground meat ?  I'll take Neura 95% Meats, Wellness 95% meats, EVO or Evangers over BG any day of the week. At least you get your money's worth. and the quality is so much better. The BG dry is ok but that canned really sucks.

I don't pay $2+ a can (I think $1.60) but what it is 50% water? I didn't realize this. I thought it was almost all meat except for thickener, preservative and yeah a little bit of water but not 50%? I also thought it had reasonable kcals. The moisture content is also the about the same as wellness I think.

I also like Wellness & Evo 95% meat too.  Wellness is about the same cost wise (except the Venison I think is costly) but Evo is a bit more expensive.

I've also thought about trying Nature's Variety 95% Meat

I think I'm going to try this food, because I'm tired of ordering Fromm online. I would rotate through all 3 of the varieties.

Since Misha does so well on it, I'm probably going to add some to his food once it gets warmer and I'm more willing to spend time outside. It doesn't really give him useless, obnoxious (sugar-high) energy... he's just more willing to keep going for as long as I am. I did the numbers on Before Grain's website, which actually allows you to order at cost, without charging shipping. The cost is the same (in an ideal world) as what you would pay in a store. I did the numbers and, for the dry food, it's cheaper to order the one pound bags individually than it is to order the 25.3 lb bag. All these prices come from the Buffalo food - the chicken is a little cheaper (in the bigger bags, the 1lb bags all cost the same, which may make the difference), the salmon more expensive.

1.0 lb bag: $2.49 - $2.49 per lb (the case of twelve 1lb bags costs the same per pound)
    6.6 lb bag: $22.27 - $3.37 per lb (approximately)
    11.1lb bag: $32.42 - $2.92 per lb (approximately)
    25.3lb bag: $63.61 - $2.51 per lb (approximately)

So, if you buy two cases of the twelve 1lb bags (24 lbs total) instead of the 25.3lb Buffalo bag, you'd be saving $3.37... which adds up quickly if you're feeding a Mighty Mutt... not so quickly if you're feeding a terrier. Wink

Doesn't all canned food have lots of water in it?

We tried it for Sally for a while but I didn't like her general condition on it.  She was not as itchy, which was good, but her coat was more dull and her body condition didn't look like it should.

It's made by merrick. you know, the company that owns a lot of slaughterhouses in texas and has numerous, repeated over and over again, quality control issues? has never expressed any concern about the dogs killed/ injured , nor apparently made any changes to prevent future quality control problems?

We've had no issues with the quality for the kibble.
