Feeding tripe....

    Feeding tripe....

I found a butcher shop in our area that sells "nothing added to it" tripe.  Jack is 60 lbs and Sally is 55 lbs.  I was thinking of feeding them a meal entirely of tripe occasionally.  Is it OK to do this?  If so, how often can it be done and how much should I give?

before you get too excited about fresh tripe ask if it is green tripe or black tripe.  Its not what is added but what is taken out, most everywhere has clean tripe. I'd be surprised if it was the uncleaned and that is the 'good' stuff if you are dog LOL

Now if it is woohoo! I'm not sure how much to feed other than going by how many kcals they get per meal and looking up how many kcals in tripe.  I don't think there is any harm in feeding all tripe once in a while.

No problem at all.  In fact, there's no reason you can't feed anything once in a while!  It's just over time that you have to make sure the complete nutrition  is there.

However, I'm fairly sure that unless they have a separate operation to produce pet food, they can't sell real green tripe.  There's really strict rules about the handling and disposal of those materials in a for-human-foodchain facility.

What is the difference between the different types of tripe?

Green tripe is uncleaned tripe with all the digestive "stuff" still present. It is anywhere from green to brownish and has a distinct rather foul odor. Green tripe is not sold where human food is sold. Tripe for people is bleached and sold as bleached or honeycomb tripe. All of the stuff that makes it a good dog food is pretty much gone when it is sold for human food.

If we're talking green tripe ( I order 5 lb. chubs on-line), yes, you can feed a whole meal of it.  It's not too rich.  In fact, this wonderfully nutritious food, is fed exclusively by some kennels in the UK, I read recently.  And dogs LOVE it!  Mine have never gotten stomach or intestinal upset from an entire meal of it.  And from the very first time I fed it to them they loved it!  As has already been said, ya don't want to get your nose too close, as it smells bad.......but the dogs don't mind!  Big Smile
