Need new food, specific conditions required

Wow, it has changed a lot around here since last I visited. I could barely find my way around. I hope everyone is doing well (I don't even know if anyone remembers me here!). And by the way, I have tried searching and what not but I am just overwhelmed (as I was the first time I began this quest) with all the different kinds. So I wanted to get all your opinions. Anyway, enough of that. I need some help guys. I'm going to have to switch to a new kind of food. I have been feeding Timberwolf Organics with terrific results. I was able to get the food at wholesale cost (~$40 per bag). Well, they have increased their prices to their wholesalers and my "dealer" has decided to stop buying it. So now I have no place to buy my food. So I need to find a food that is no more than ~$45 dollars per bag shipped. I will have to buy my food online as there are no retail stores available to me locally. The food cannot contain chicken. I would prefer a brand that offered different varieties so that I can rotate them and give Max some variety. I would prefer no barley as well but that is not an absolute must. Just not high quantities of it. So guys, any suggestions, comments, questions, interrogations, etc.? (Just kidding about the interrogations. Please, none of those. Capiche?) :) EDIT: I don't know why it smushed all of my post into one paragraph. Sorry about that.

Have you looked into Merrick? Not all of their varieities are chicken free but they meet all your other guide lines and I have been feeding it to Rory for over a year now!

No, I haven't looked into Merrick. If I remember correctly, didn't Merrick used to have problems in the quality control department? I believe I remember something about someone finding a nail in their canned food. I can't recall exactly though. I'll take a look at them though. Thanks. And by the way, I think I remember you and Rory. Didn't you used to go by a different user name? Actually I know that I remember you. I chatted on here with you for a while when I was trying to find the right dog to adopt. How have things been going? EDIT: How do I put different paragraphs into my posts? This is bugging me..

Hey Nathan, If you check out the Innova site it has a food comparison tool that you could look for ingredient lists on.  If you go with a food made by that company it also tells you where you can buy it from.  Other than that I'm no help.  My food isn't sold online.

ETA:  OOps I forgot the website. Natura Pet

Will do. Thanks. How have you been, Candace?

I'm good, I was wondering where you had gotten off to lately?

    • Gold Top Dog
Oh, well school and a full time job dictated how much time I can spend on the internet nowadays. So I haven't had much extra time lately.

You really must readjust your priorities boy!  LOL  Ah well, good to see you back, even if its just for a short while.

     Canidae lamb?

will still be more than $45 but TWO does do 10% off and free shipping on 2 #33lb bags

California Natural has a few formulas and I think can be had for about that price

    Wellness may be?

    Blue Buffalo

I'm sure other will give you some other options

Appreciate the welcome back. I'll try to stop in whenever I get a chance. I'm starting to become an old fart though. "Gosh dang these fandangled contraptions! Do I left or right click?!" Ha, I think I'd rather spend more time watching tv and relaxing. Wow, I really got off-topic here. Back to it. I looked at those Innova foods and they looked like they all had chicken in them. Max is allergic to chicken so thats a no go. I've looked at Canidae in the Lamb Variety as well and it is well within my budget. I may just do that, but I would prefer to find a food with more variations so that I can rotate them. Anybody have any other suggestions?

I'll look a little closer at Wellness. I forgot to add the shipping cost into the Canidae. Quick question though, where do most of you buy your food, if you shop online?

Hi, I have a "no chicken" dog too!  I can get his food locally, thankfully, and in fact just found a feed store just a few minutes from here where they will order his food right there (I was going about an hour away, that's "local" for me!).

Don't forget to figure out the actual cost of feeding when you compare the prices of the different foods.  So let's say you are shipping a food that costs $2 a pound with shipping, and ship 20 pounds (just to make the math easy).  $40 for Food A.  Food B costs $3.00 a pound with shipping, and  you get 20 pounds.  $60 for Food B.  No contest, right?  But wait.  Food A is 300 kcal per cup, while Food B is almost 500.

You actually have to translate the figures to kilograms to get the real story.  But you can eyeball that and see that you are getting very close to the same bang for your shipping buck - if not even more! - from some of the higher priced, grain frees like Nature's Variety Instinct (Turkey and Duck), Orijen Fresh Fish, Solid Gold Barking at the Moon, and EVO Red Meat (no chicken in that).

K9cuisine.com has free shipping on orders over $50, which is easy to do if you order food like Orijen, lol.

Hold the presses, folks! I just looked over there and they are having a giganto sale on NV cans!!  Oh, please God, please let the sale run until Thursday night when I get paid!!!

Anyway, you might want to check over there - there's several foods that are on sale, also - including TW.  And some nice all-natural treats, yay!  It's so hard to find stuff for my allergy dog, so I feel your pain.

Brookcove- I think everyone is marking down NV to clear out that particular line of discontinued canned food. So if K9cuisine runs out, Petfooddirect has a really good deal on them too.

EDIT: How do I put different paragraphs into my posts? This is bugging me..

    You can use

tags to begin and end paragraphs. Or, since you're probably using Safari and it doesn't work so well with this board, you can download Firefox and have WYSIWYG and smilies and all that.

For ordering online I recommend k9cuisine.com. I've ordered from them several times and have been very happy with the service. Their prices are inflated to absorb the shipping, but it's not as high as paying shipping separately.

ETA: I also recommend Hearty Pet, but only when they are having free or reduced shipping deals (3-4 times a year). It's worth getting on their e-mail list.
