What do you think of Nutro Natural Choice?

Shamrockmommy;  According to Royal canin, their products are less dense than their competitors because less density makes dog food more digestible; for some reason I can't select what I want to copy on their page so here is the link;  [linkhttp://www.royalcanin.us/faq.html#13] http://www.royalcanin.us/faq.html#13[/link]

It comes from the question regarding switching a Labrador from Iams to their product. Anyway, that may explain why some members have dogs that don't do well on foods like Canidae and Innova.

    ORIGINAL: sooner

No one is trying to pressure you into anything. I do apologize if it seems that way. No one on this board at any time should feel like they have to defend what they are feeding. I will not ever fault anyone for making the decisions they make for their pets as long as they are informed decisions. We are answering the question "What do you think of Nutro Natural Choice?" with our own opinions and knowledge....

    Exactly.

The page you linked illustrates a few points I have tried to make before. A dog of a certain size is used to eating a certain amount of food. For my dog, Nutro has the right kcals, etc, (or "density") for the amount of food he eats. Some, not all dogs, depending on their metabolism may not do as well on a calorie-dense food, and metabolism can be affected by breed. For example, Dobies can have a taurine deficiency. Or, all the other ingredients that make a food "holistic" may not be as agreeable to the system. Just because a gray wolf can eat a berry off of a bush doesn't mean your dog can, regardless of genetic similarity. So, my second point is that calorie dense foods may be better, on average, for smaller breeds, who can only eat so much. Then again, a number of "holistics" eschew corn because it is branded as the bad grain and rice because many lay people have the opinion that rice has no nutrients and instead use barley, which has been known to be an allergen far more often than corn or rice.

Nutro Natural Choice is a good food.  It's not the best ingredients wise, but it's still better than many other foods.

Nutro Natural Choice is one of those foods that if the dog does good on it, there's not need to critisize someone for feeding it.  It's still a good food.

Thanks EVERYONE for your concern and your responses. I really do appreciate it. I did buy Nutro and Bogey just loves it and gobbles it down. I am mixing a bit of her old stuff with it to change her over gradually and just keeping an eye on her to make sure she keeps it down.  So far, so good - it's only been a day.  I'll keep her on this for a month and see how it goes.  If it doesn't seem to be helping, I"ll probabyl try one of the others listed in these posts.  Thanks again.

IMHO, from what I can see of ingredient lists and nutrient profiles, Eagle Pack is a good brand to go to if Nutro doesn't work out. Several people here have had wonderful results with Eagle Pack. It would be our "go-to" brand if what we were feeding wasn't working out.

I agree that Eagle Pack would be a good choice if things don't work out.  I don't think I've ever heard anyone having problems w/ EP (of course I could be wrong), but that's what I can remember. :)

I've heard of some people that it didn't work out for, but you can say that about ANY food.

Eagle Pack Holistics is a good choice, the lamb, duck or fish should be good for an allergy dog. Eagle Pack isn't available at Petsmart or Petco though. They have a store locator on their site.

Dweezil loves her Nutro Max (I know they're slightly different) -- I was very very confused and stressed for a couple of weeks while I did my food shopping.  Dweezil just loves it, though -- she pratically inhales it; I've had to portion her food for her, because she eats it so fast, she throws up ...  I will of course continue to look for a "better" food ... but I wanted to find a food that is good, that regardless of how much money I'm making at the time, I will be able to afford with absolutely no problem, so that I can offer her that consistency.  I had been looking into buying Wellness from a local shop, but at the steep prices, I wasn't so sure ... and she was already in love with her Nutro.  Call it sad that I would put so much on the price of the food, but it truly is a factor.  She's healthy and has no problems ... so why not, until I find something that suits us better?
