The canned foods are a good idea. It's a nice way to put whole meats in your dogs' diet on a regular basis. Some dogs don't take to some foods. It's fine. It's a good idea to try rotating to another food again - but be sure to buy a small bag!
I don't have a good notion about whether small breed puppies benefit from puppy food versus adult food. I feed my working Border collies adult rations from day one, as it is widely recommended for our breed. I followed the same protocol with my Chinese crested, but I was using EVO for the three months before she reached pretty much full size.
Last year I missed being caught in the diamond fiasco because while Diamond was in the rotation for my guard dogs, they were not on it at the time. If I had lost my guard dogs at that time, I would have lost my flock to predators, it being high season for hill coyote incursions. I've since switched them off cheaper feeds entirely but I had no choice at the time - they eat food by the pound, since they are very large and burn calories at about the same rate as working sled dogs. I'm a BIG beleiver in spreading my risk exposure around among different foods and feeding approaches, since then. And I think it fits the adaptation profile of dogs well, too, as they started out as opportunistic feeders.
