    Large breed puppy

Hi there I am new to this forum amd I am glad I found it. We just added a new puppy to the family the other day and we have a few questions about feeding. Our puppy is a Ret/ St.Bernard mix and I know that the have special diet needs, but how can we tell which food is better then another? I read on here that Timberwolf was a good brand, but it is a little pricy. is there another choice that might be a little cheaper, or is it worth the extra money?
Also how much and how often should we feed her? And is Wet any Better then Dry?
    Thank you for you time.

The breeder that I got my two working shepherds from feeds his dogs Solid Gold. But what every you get just look at the ingredients, protein, and fat.

thanks for the advice, what is a good % to have right nowwe are feeding her purina Beneful wet food that is 11% protien and 2% fat.

you may want to look at some foods specifically for large breed puppies. you dont want him to grow too fast

Since you have a large breed puppy you shouldn't go over 26% protien, 18% fat.

Innova makes a good Large Breed Puppy food.

I fed Marley Eagle Pack Large Breed Puppy! If you go on their website and fill out their recommendation form. They send you a coupon for a free bottle of "Transition."[;)]

Eagle Pack also makes an excellent Large & Giant Breed Puppy formula.  It's 23% protein, 12% fat, which is appropriate for large breed puppies - it helps them maintain slow, steady growth.  The cost for a 16.9lb bag here in NE Ohio is about $24.  EP puts out coupons each month on their website and that helps a bit.   [linkhttp://www.eaglepack.com]www.eaglepack.com[/link] Christi

Great Dane Lady has an excellent website and lots of info on raising large and giant breed dogs. She tends to prefer Eagle Pack Large Breed Puppy and Adult, as it was tested on Great Danes. Large breed formulas are careful about the mix of phosphorous and calcium, as well as limiting the speed of weight gain in large breed puppies, to avoid skeletal problems later on.

I recommend feeding a large breed formula, and remeber the best food for your dog is the food that agrees with him the best, be it Eagle Pack, Eukanuba or any other food.

Also, I believe that wet food makes for stinkier, softer stools? someone correct me if im wrong

I've tried a few different things, and i've found that Innova large breed puppy is the best for me. It has made my ridgeback's coat silky and soft, and he only poops twice a day. It's like 23.99 for a 16.5 lb bag, and it's worth every penny! I also like Canidae...they make an all life stages formula, but i like Innova the best

Thank you for all the great tips guys, we really appericate it. I'll keep you all posted on how it goes.

Just wondering, she is only about 8wks old and weighs 10 lbs. is there any way to guess how big she might get?

                                       Thanks again

I forgot to ask, she really isn't eating her dry food, is wet any better, and if not we would rather her eat dry, is there any tips for getting her to eat it?

I have a formula for how big she may get...but it doesn't always work. Weigh her at 4 months old...she should be about that weight x3! Anyway, Marley was 30 pounds at 4 months and he is 70 pounds not 90 like they thought he would be...so like I said, it doesn't always work [:)].

Canned food is great as long as you brush your dog's teeth regularly, start young.

Please, Please, Please get him off of Beneful.  Beneful is a cupcake with vitamins.  There are alot of fillers in Beneful and it's far to costly for what's in it.

As far as canned food goes I like Eagle Pack, Nuera, and Merrick.  If you feed him a canned food like Pedigree or Alpo your giving your dog mostly water and horse meat.

Canned food is actually probably BETTER for their teeth than is kibble.  CARBS contribute greatly to plaque build up and the good canned foods have none or very few carbs.
