Food apparently has too much protein, causing upset tummy, what should I swithc to?

rice and pumpkin and beet pulp "artificially" firm the stools. It's not the protein level/ carbohydrate level of the food that causes diarrhea-- your dog is having problems digesting the particular food you are feeding for some reason.
    Just try some other brands.

I have 2 Scotties (11 & 13 yrs old). They were eating ONE lamb and rice for many years until they started developing really bad allergies. After spending thousands of dollards on specialists, shots, treatments, meds, special foods and treats, I can honestly say I found something that worked.  While it takes time after switching their diet, I have to say Natural Balance Duck and Potato has been a God send for not only my dogs, but me as well. I can't imagine any dog having bowel problems with this stuff. My dogs are very regular and the stools are healthy. Quite frankly when the vet had me first try Science Diet their stools were nothing more than runny oatmeal and the allergies still persist. I will probably never feed my dogs (both now and future) anything other than Natural Balance again. The dog food seems very healthy for them and they love the treats as well.

not really sure why these old threads are coming up. I personally think Natural Balance is way too low in protein/ high in carbs to feed to any dog unless you are in serious need of a food for a dog with allergies or are willing to supplement with extra protein.  Just cause your dog doesn't have diarrhea doesn't mean he's "doing well" and "achieving optimal health for life". Diarrhea just means the food is REALLY bad for him; he may appear "relatively healthy" for a few years on a food that is only moderately bad for him.

I have my Scottie Max on Duck and Potato Natural Balance too. It was a God Send...After going to a specialist and having test ran it all came back IBD and I had to find 1 Novel Protein he hadn't been exposed to... He was so sick till I put him on this food and now he has AWESOME quality of life :) I know a lot of people who have had great luck with this as well :) I tried other Duck and Potato foods.. HIGH Quality foods like Fromm and it did nothing but cause problems. Im all for if its not broke don't try to fix it.. :) My Dear Scottie Alley who went to the Bridge in August has severe allergies.... She is dearly missed and passed with Melanoma at the age of 6..... So I know all the work that goes into dogs

I recently joined and saw your post.  I imagine the problem has been long taken care of by now.  If not I can tell you with our very first Scottie Duffie she was 13 and had to have her gall bladder removed along with many other nagging  liver problems.  We  made chicken breast bolied and just added sweet potatos masshed together in a food processor.  You may want to add any supplements as well.  She loved her diet the rest of her time.  We are currently feeding Brody & Ella Stella & Chewey's Raw Chicken  & Lamb.  I would not necessarily recommend that for a senior dog unless they have already tried it without any issues.
