I see they are imported from Chile.  Thank goodness i don't give my dogs any kind of things like this.  use to give rawhides but one would try to swallow it when it got soft and would gag and hack and bring it back up.  After she did that a 2ed time, no more stuff like for mine.

But what in the word is going to be next?  Before long the only thing we will want to give our dogs are pats on the head.

    Thanks for the post.

Actually, my vet had told me (warned me) to be very careful handling any type of real chew like that ( or bone)  She said they can be very dangerous as far as bacteria.  You've got to be very careful and wash your hands after dealing with them.  I stopped giving most real chews because it gets on Willow's mane and is then a hazard to us.  It's not worth it.

Hm. I do give Dweezil pig ears from a LPS that we've been going to for years ... might have a chat w/them and see where they get them. Thanks for the info, but the site won't come up ... I'll try again later.

Pig ears are just not goo to feed your dog.  Dogs have choked on the sharp pieces that they might swallow.

There are a lot of things that could cause problems, though--being outside could get her bitten (edit) by spiders (which has happened, but I'm still going to let her go out to play and dig thru the leaf piles), she could find a piece of whatever in the grass that flew in from the neighbor's yard, etc. If we're not talking about the recall having to do with salmonella then... I mean, I really do appreciate the comment. Dweezil's about 2 and she's always had pig ears--never been a problem, she's never choked or had a hard time because of eating too fast, and she doesn't get them when I'm not around. I had a dog that lived to be 16 and ate a pig ear almost every day. Dweezil gets them maybe once a week. Thanks, though. It's just I think there are things that need to be paid special attention to (and if you read my posts I'm pretty obsessive about a lot of things with Dweezil) and some things, IMO, don't have to make me lose sleep.

They are so high in fat I'd be more worried about pancreatitis issues or weight gain than choking.  As for salmonella, that can be with any real chew and I'd be more worried about myself than the dog getting it.

willowchow--I completely agree with the salmonella statement. Maybe it's selfish, but by protecting my dog from fleas and from other parasites, my main thought is ... she sits on my couch, and she's in our home all day ... we'd completely be at risk as well.

Amen!!  The digestive system of carnivores is designed to handle a certain amount of bacteria like salmonella.  They can take a bone outside, chew on it, bury it, dig it back up, and chew on it some more (repeat, repeat, repeat, ...).  I wonder what the bacteria count is on those bones?  [8D]
