Trachea?

    Trachea?

What are the benefits of giving a dog Trachea? Is it a chewable?
    • Gold Top Dog
Trachea is a tube that connects the mouth and nose to the lungs.  A tracheotomy would be a surgical procedure to elongate this tube.  For example my Mom's shih tzu has issues with a collapsing trachea, meaning she'll start wheezing until that tube relaxes (not a good description but I'm lazy at the moment).  Thankfully she is not so bad that it requires surgery.

    Trachea is not a food.

Raw feeders give their dogs Trachea. My supplier carries it and I'm wondering whether it has an added benefit. Specially for a dog with arthritis.

One of the ;pet supply stores/feed stores I go to sells dried lamb and cow trachea.  It's good for dogs with arthritus, has something in it (can't remember) that helps the joints.  My dog loves it, I've given her some in place of rawhide.

I've even seen it for sale on dog.com, I'll find the link...

Do you mean tripe?  cow instestines I think.  My dogs love canned tripe from Solid Gold.

Tripe is different to Trachea. Maybe it has Glucosamine which is good for arthritis? I can get raw trachea.

this is what they look like:

Now that I found them I think I might just place an order soon[;)]
EDIT:Opps, they are out of stock[>:], It says they are in stock on the page but when I go to my cart it says they are out?   Guess I'll have to wait to order some...

    Thank you for the info.

Now that I have seen the size, I'm a bit worried of him trying to swollow it. I heard its chewy, so if he get tired chewing it, he'll try to swollow it.

Has anyone fed a raw trachea to their dogs?
    • Gold Top Dog
The ones on dog.com are listed as 6 inches long...Is that to small?  My dog will swallow anything that fits into her mouth and I'm afrade of giving her rawhide but she does alright with these, I just watch her while she chews them and I belive they are easyer to digest than ryhide or bone.

I am also intrested in trying raw, anyone have a link to where I could order some raw?

6" might be too small my lab. But I'll give it a try once

I buy premade raw from an Omas Pride dealer in NJ.

aww...I see, yes a lab might swallow anything[;)]  I get mine from a local feed store but I don't know where I  can get raw around here.  I've been loking for a local raw feeder provider but I've had little luck in my area.

Trachea (windpipe) is cartilidge (what gives ears their shape).  Like the ends of chicken leg bones, dog and human leg bones have cartilidge at the joints.  Being a natural instead of sythetic source I would guess it would be a positive addition to an arthritic dog's diet.

Dogs can't absorb the glucosamin in Trachea?
    • Gold Top Dog
I think they're supposed to swallow it. My dog eats one in about 10-15 minutes. She rips off a little piece at a time. Your lab could probably finish faster. You said you're worried he'll swallow it... did you mean choke? I'm almost certain they're meant to be eaten, not just chewed. My dog has a sensitive stomach but the trachea has never caused any problems.
