    how much glucosamine?

How much glucosamine is good for a 10 lb. dog?  I feed her Innova and she is 2.5 yrs. old.  I am going to feed it as a preventative to make joints strong before it is an issue, as suggested previously on here.  She is a mini dachshund.  Thanks!

    Hi
We give our dogs a brand which contains 500mg Glucosamine  and 400mg Chrondroitin, 2 daily for each dog. In our case, our dogs weigh around 50 or more pounds. I wouldn't know about a dog the size of yours, but I wouldn't think that 1 daily would be too much. From what I understand, there is no known toxicity level. Good luck in find a more scholarly answer.

I was thinking 500 mg gluc. 400 chon. is probably the smallest they sell.  My mom has some here that size and they look huge.  How do you feed them to the dogs?  Do they chew them or swallow it whole?  I could put it in peanut butter to get Zoe to swallow it but I would have to cut it much smaller first.  I could add it to her food if she could chew it.

We buy capsules and empty the powder right into their food. I listened to an internet radio show a few weeks back.  It was an interview of a country Vet who runshttp://www.critteradvocacy.org/. On the show, he was recommending the same 500mg/400mg dose for dogs. There's a lot of good info on that website about the truth about pet vaccines, etc...

I give my 14 lb dog, about 250-500mg per every 5 days (I homecook a 5 day batch of food, and just crush tablet in food). So that is about 50-100mg per day. I give it as a preventative too.

This info may be of help:

She says 25-50 lb dog = 500 mg Gluc/Chond (so a 10 lb dog would get 250 mg). I think maybe that is for a dog with arthritis, or hip issues, etc. For "preventative" use, I think a half dose is ok (10 lb dog would get 125 mg or less) ? I don't know. But, that's what I do. I use scissors to cut the pill. It's easy.

I am refering to human ones.  And, I don't know anything about being too young to start but I'd think it is ok if the dog is full grown.  A vet would know for sure.
