    Barking at the Moon

Can anyone help me?  I went to find some today thinking the proteins were beef and salmon.  Well, the bag I found was turkey and salmon and it also had turkey and salmon meal.  Have they changed the ingredient list?  I didn't get it because after I got confused I got nervous not knowing what was going on.

If anyone could fill me in that would be great.

Turkey and salmon were the old ingredients, the store must not have gotten the new food in yet.

Lori, Solid Gold is changing the formula from turkey/salmon to beef/salmon. I'm not sure whether the new formula is out yet though. Their website says it's out of stock.

Oh, OK, well, then I think I'm going to wait to try it until the new one comes in.  No sense in getting her transitioned to the one they are going to discontinue.  Thanks!

Lori, I found out from another forum that the new formula is already available. You may want to check with the store to see whether they can order it in for you.

I bought some BATM yesterday and it is the new beef and salmon formula.  I am wondering if I will see any differences from the change....I expect not.

Does BATM have the percentage of ash on the bag; it's not on Solid Gold's website. The reason I bring this up is because EVO is 12.38% ash, which is rather high. I didn't realize it until papillon, who is a graduate student studying companion animal nutrition mentioned it;   [linkhttp://forum.dog.com/asp/tm.asp?m=128345&mpage=1&key=ash%2CEVO%2Chigh]http://forum.dog.com/asp/tm.asp?m=128345&mpage=1&key=ash%2CEVO%2Chigh[/link]

"  I *think* that EVO uses a more concentrated meat meal which is why it has a very high amount of ash (which is also probably why other companies won't use such dense meals"

    [linkhttp://forum.dog.com/asp/tm.asp?m=128345&mpage=2&key=ash%2CEVO%2Chigh]http://forum.dog.com/asp/tm.asp?m=128345&mpage=2&key=ash%2CEVO%2Chigh[/link]

" Yes, that is true.  It is more so linked to kidney/urinary tract issues than anything else.  If your dog is 100% healthy, a high-ash diet shouldn't be a problem.  However, it is almost impossible to determine whether or not your dog is genetically prone to such problems, so IMO I don't think it's worth the risk"

You may want to get your vet's opinion before trying this food.

No ash content on the bag of the new formula.  The calories per cup increased from 400 to 465.

    I e-mailed Solid Gold and asked what the ash content of Barking at the Moon is and here is their response;

    Thank you for your inquiry,
The ash content of the Barking at the Moon is 9.8%

I have emailed them a couple times too and have gotten quick responses.  Is 9.8 % considered high?

well, one would prefer NO ash in the diet. TO's wild n natural has 5% ash. EVO has what, 13% ash?
    • Gold Top Dog
well, one would prefer NO ash in the diet.

One would NOT prefer no ash. The ash is the mineral content of the food. First of all, it would be impossible for there to be no ash, and even if you did somehow remove it, can we say mineral deficiency? No calcium, phosphorous, iron, magnesium, potassium, etc? Yikes.

I searched online yesterday evening and couldn't find a site which said " X amount of ash is ideal, or don't feed a dog food with more than X amount". I know a graduate student studying companion animal nutrition and she said she wouldn't use a dog food with an amount of ash greater than 8%. Your vet may also have an idea of what is considered a safe level.
