What would you buy?

    • Gold Top Dog
Solid Gold Holistique Blendz Adult Dog Fish; their other foods have barley.
Timberwolf Organics Ocean Blue and their Dakota Bison

Natural Balance Potato and Fish and Natural Balance Venison and Brown Rice

I know these are holistic but I also have to avoid chicken and that's tough to do with mid grade kibble without factoring in the fact that Willow can't have chicken fat and barley. I was thinking of Nutro Max Beef but it has chicken fat. Why not stay with the Authority since Willow is doing okay on it?

I'm using a Blackwood product in my kibble rotation.  I'm using their Trout and Potato but they have a lamb and rice (with poultry meal listed but pretty far down) and the trout and potato has trout meal and duck meal.  Their non-allergy products are kind of mid-grade but I've got a TON of friends who switched their performance dogs after the Diamond thing and they are really happy.  The company is a great one.

You might check out Diamond, too, really.   I tried a sample of a new formula they were coming out with for seniors with cranberry and oint supplements and whatnot, on Doug the Dog, and he did pretty well.  It was chicken and oatmeal based.  I figure they are towing the line right now at least, though I don't know I'd trust them in the future.  The people at Blackwood are MUCH nicer. I would feed Nutro Natural Choice, if I had a "normal" dog, and no access to super-premiums. Teenie's had it, before, with no ill effects (out of somebody else's bowl) and it's a decent food. I'd add extra meat to their bowls, though.

As it is now, I don't normally feed the super-premiums. They mostly get fresh food. This morning, Emma indulged in a can of dog food (she thinks dog food is the BEST!) since I hadn't made her food, and had to go to work.

She does like Nutro Max Beef and she does well even though it's got the chicken fat.  She is doing better on Authority, she looks good, she's acting great, no eye yuck, not doggie stink, etc.
But, I'm concerned, I don't want her ended up with problems later from the animal fat.  Especially if there is truth to the fact that euthanasia chemicals or plastic could be included.

I've never worried about corn or grain or anything as long as it agreed with her.  But, I don't let her have chemicals or BHT and so that's my worry.  Otherwise, I'd leave her on it.  I still might since other than the Max I don't think she'll eat any of the holistic ones.  Just too many veggies and herbs, etc, she's not into holistic at all.

Sounds like me, I don't blame her! [:)

she needs a plain, one meat kibble, no barley, no chicken.  She can eat beef, turkey and fish fine.  Grains don't bother her.  I can't believe it's this hard to find a kibble for her.  I'm about to say forget it and she won't get one.

    Hi Lori,

Admittedly, most of these are holistic brands but hopefully some of them have products that you haven#%92t tried:

    1) California Natural Lamb & Rice
    2) Wellness Simple Solutions: Venison or Duck
    3) Avoderm Lamb Meal & Rice or Specialty Dry Oven Baked Canine Formula
    4) Pinnacle Duck & Potato or Trout & Sweet Potato
    5) Back to Basics Pork Formula
    6) Solid Gold Barking at the Moon (New formula: Salmon & Beef)
    7) Ziwi Peak: Lamb, Venison or Venison & Fish

I would really, really recommend trying Natural Balance Venison & Brown Rice.

Here are the ingredients (minus vitamins for readability):

Venison, Whole Grain Brown Rice, Rice Flour, Venison Meal, Rice Bran, Canola Oil (preserved With Mixed Tocopherols And Citric Acid), Natural Flavor, Flaxseed Oil, Kelp Meal, Yucca Schidigera Extract, Potassium Chloride, Sodium Chloride, Choline Chloride, L-lysine, Dl-methionine, Dicalcium Phosphate, Dried Parsley, Rosemary Extract...

There are NO vegetables, fruits, herbs, etc. Also no chicken, chicken fat (or any animal fat for that matter), and no barley. I think it's very palatable. They also have a canned version of the same food and it smells like beef jerky! Smells so good I almost want to eat it.[;)]

    Thank you!

How about the Natural Balance rolls added into the Natural Balance?  I've known a couple of people who could not get their dogs to eat Wellness, but they loved Natural Balance.
    • Gold Top Dog
Thank you.  She does love those rolls but unfortunately she can't have them even to train.  For some reason even just a little irritate her system.  I think it's the combination of organ meat.
