Cooking Beef Heart

    Cooking Beef Heart

So, I picked up another package of beef hearts to try out again. The first time I got a package of it, it came with hearts and livers which I just pan friend in some EVOO and cut up for the dogs food that way.

I was looking for a different method of cooking because this time, the hearts I got are a bit chunkier. I know I could always slice them thinner before pan frying them, but is there another way that the dogs love? All I could find online was braising it.

I cook once a week for the dogs, so this would be added to white and dark meat chicken and tons of veggies. I would like a technique that is fairly easy to do every week.

    Thanks!

I baked some beef kidney in the oven for the dogs. I think you could do the same with heart and then slice it up.

    Thanks Kate Smile

Also, is this something I should feed once in awhile since it is so rich or does it matter?

Raw?  My dogs LOVE raw beef heart.

If you can convince the butcher to slice it in wedges rather than merely "slicing" this thing that looks like a deflated soccer ball -- then it is MUCH easier to just cut it in cubes.  3/4" wedges results in something that is then easy to just cut into 3/4" cubes.  E ... Z

Then just lightly saute in a bit of olive oil.  That's all.  No heavy cooking or baking needed at all.  And yeah -- usually you can give it raw.  It's a "clean organ" so it's one of the easier things to give raw.

OR just parboil it -- then use that water to make beefy-ice for the dogs.  You will win on ALL counts!!

It has a lot of iron; 3 ounces cooked has 30% of an adult human's daily requirement, so you may want to avoid feeding it everyday.

I roast it when I fix it for the family.

We feed it raw with some meals.

I also cut it small, & boil it to use for training treats.

When I feed it I feed it raw. I can't see a good reason to cook it so in the bowl it goes LOL

I do cut it thin and make treats by baking it at a low temp - those are HIGH value especially if I sprinkle a tiny bit of garlic powder on before baking

It *is* a good one to give raw.  But both Kate/Frisby PI and I started championing beef heart when we were feeding it to our IMHA dogs.  With IMHA dogs have to take huge quantities of immune-suppressors so you don't give those dogs ANYTHING raw.

For a normal, relatively healthy dog you shouldn't need to cook it -- altho I live in Florida ... known home to every type of bacteria on the planet.  LOL
