I started giving Jessie boiled chicken gizzards a few days ago; she gets one a day. I'm trying them for her incontinence; it's a traditional Chinese medicine remedy. It's the lining of the gizzard that's supposed to help,

Fantastic ! thanks for that .  I didn't know that either.   Chinese Medicine fasinates me.  We use alot of TCVM and as much as I try to learn and understand there are so many connections that just go over my head :(    Prancer doesn't have an incontinence issue but maybe the gizzards will prevent that from ever happening !

I had to stop trying the gizzard, and also stop giving her the Blue Buffalo Maturity canned. She had a major allergy flare up, with lots of face rubbing and itchy ears. I was worried about the gizzard because she's allergic to chicken. She's also allergic to salmon and mackerel, so the whitefish in the Blue could also be making her itch. I've started giving her some of the cooked diet ( rice and turkey) that Monica formulated for her last year. She stopped eating it last fall because it's very bland, but she seems to like it mixed with her Nutro. I don't like feeding her only kibble; I think it's important for them to have some fresher food in their diet.

Dyan, has Freeway's mom found some canned food that's lower in fat?

what a bummer about Jessie's allergies :(       I did look at the list of foods for pancreatic dogs from the yahoo group - pretty much all prescription diets.     The option of feeding higher fat foods and adding in low fat foods to supplement will work if you can figure out all of Jessie's allergies.  Not sure if its worth the risk.     I feel for you.

Sorry I didn't see additions to this......I STILL HATE this forum when they changed the way you get notices......I sometimes remember to change the statis to ON and sometimes not.....but I ALWAYS think the I did..... I wish they could just make it like other forums...you want to be notified if someone answers a thread PERIOD....not one time and not the next.  Geesh!

Anyway....I think it was Fromm that she bought 2 cans of along with 2 more cans of Cal Natural canned which is the one that is higher in fat.  I think Fromm was 4%....if I remember,,,,BUT she said Freeway don't like it, so not sure she opened the other can or not.     I did tell her about what you use ( used in Blue ) and she was going to get it....I keep asking her if she did and she keeps not answering Hmm  She has lots of problems with her kids ( as in grown up sons ) and she has health worries having just had a double mastectomy a year ago......so sometimes its hard to pinpoint her down to a certain conversation.    We are supposed to get together this week and go to the pet store for some food and research................I'll let you know!

Thanks for looking at the list; I really appreciate it. Jessie is doing great on the Nutro Venison and Rice, but I wanted to add a nice canned food as a mixer. Because of her food allergies and need for a low fat diet, about the only canned foods she can have are Hill's i/d and z/d. I do add boiled turkey and egg white as toppers, and give her pieces of baked ground beef for treats. I'm going to try using some of the cooked diet that Monica formulated, with some pureed veggies, as a mixer. The option of feeding higher fat foods mixed with low fat ones doesn't work very well. I hope I don't bore you with this, but for example, the Wellness canned Turkey and Barley stew is 4% fat and has 4.7 grams of fat per 100 calories. If I mix that with 50/50 with her cooked diet, which has 2.6 grams of fat per 100 calories, that's still 3.7 grams of fat per 100 calories, which is high for Jessie. I know from experience that she won't tolerate that many grams of fat; she will stop eating and act like she doesn't feel well. All dogs with pancreatitis are different, so Prancer may tolerate more fat.

I had to take her to the vet today; she has an infection in both ears.Sad  It's my fault; I was careless, and  will never give her fish or chicken in her diet again. Overall though, she's doing great, especially for 12. We still walk an hour or more daily, and she doesn't seem to be bothered by arthritis; just a bad mommy who won't leave well enough alone.

Sounds like she has a lot to deal with. I hope Freeway continues to do well. You're a very good friend to be concerned about her dog.
